I saw this article today about skipping school, and noticed the DDR reference.

Here is a link to the article.

Quote
Once the school day gets going, Tam meets up with his friends and decides whether or not to skip. The answer is usually yes, at which point they typically head downtown to GameWorks, where they'll spend the rest of the day playing Maximum Tune 2 or Dance Dance Revolution. When Tam tires of the video arcade, he goes over to a friend's house, where he'll often spend the night. His mother, a Vietnamese refugee who speaks little English, typically has no idea where he is or what he's doing.

Quote
The group gets bored of Uwajimaya and decides to head downtown to GameWorks. While on the bus, a man in the back pulls out a long pipe and a glass bong with the price tag still attached. He takes practice hits from them, testing their seals.

"Whoa," Johnson exclaims. "He's got a bomb."

"You mean 'bong,' dude," the man says. "Don't say 'bomb.' They'll think we're gonna blow up the bus or something."

The boys get off a few stops later and walk into GameWorks. "That's some crazy stuff," Tam says, shaking his head. "I think those guys are potheads."

Tam admits that he does dream of being successful. When asked what he'd really, really like to do, he responds that he would love to design video games. "RPGs, shooters, race games, all that stuff," he says.

Someone points out that he probably can't do that without some sort of education. Tam cocks his head and flashes a sheepish smile. "I told you, it's just a dream," he says.

Tam jumps on a Dance Dance Revolution game and selects a song, all but drowned out by the thumping house music emanating from another game. His feet move faster and faster as the instructions scroll across the screen at blinding speed. Somehow, he manages to keep up, and snaps off long strings of perfect combinations, hiking up his jeans every so often. The small room fills with the sound of his shoes stomping down to choreography that only he knows, music that only he can hear.

Interesting!

Yeah, because of COURSE the normal DDR player always smokes a "bomb" on the bus "before stomping  down to choreography."

Dude...  I think the arrows are moving.

haha

If you guys actually bothered to look at the rest of the article you would realize that the DDR thing is an analogy to the rest of his weirdo school-skipping son-of-a-vietnamese-immigrant life.

You're assuming we didn't read the whole thing because of that?  I thought it was just a poorly written article.  You shouldn't be writing so indirectly about your subject in a typical newspaper article.  We want the facts, not bad DDR metaphors.

Remember that the article is not geared towards DDR players.

But yeah, you're right, I shouldn't have presumed you didn't read the article. Sorry Sad

Yeah, stuff tends to come off sounding funny when you're uninformed (the newspaper article I mean).  Truthfuly though, I only skimmed most of it because after reading the first paragraph I just didn't really care much about the article..

After reading the article, I'm still baffled as to what all this is supposed to accomplish.

Do they really think kids are going to "shape up" and start faithfully planting their asses in chairs for eight hours a day if they just threaten them enough?  Granted, I'm not exactly their target audience, but I don't see why anyone would react to electronic home monitoring with warm fuzzies.

Do they actually think that you can force someone to give you years of their life?  You can get them to do it if you get them to love you,  or you convince them it's important, or you offer them something in exchange.  But they don't seem to be doing that - it's like they're trying to make the kids feel resentful (and unwelcome).

I don't get it.  Sorry to derail the topic (since it was nominally about DDR), but I just don't get it.

I am oh-so-glad I don't have kids.

King County Youth Detention Center in Seattle has a really nice library, you can get on the internet, and check out tons of manga, which they regularly update. Raman Hall in Tacoma is old and shitty, but thats Pierce County for ya.
