So this kinda started in the air hockey forum.

Discuss what, in your opinion, would be the ideal ruleset for an:

a) ITG Tech Tournament (not needed now, but thanks!)
b) DDR Tech Tournament
c) IIDX Tech Tournament

EDIT: Done with ruleset discussion, I think it's just a matter of finding out if people want this to actually happen.

There's no reason to bar the use of Random/Mirror, because as James said, if you're willing to use random in a tourney situation, you are probably skilled enough that it won't matter, or it's a chart where everyone will want random.  If we do have a non-random tourney, I'll gladly pick Kakumei 7k/[a] against the people who don't want random since even in an extreme case like that, it barely makes a difference in my score/pass rate (well, actually, I can only pass Kakumei [a] without random).  Now Random+Mirror is a whole different story...  Cool

I'd add in use of effectors, because that's down to a preference audio adjustment and echo/surround do actually emphasize parts of the music a bit differently to the point that it can help or hurt if you pick certain ones.

Sudden/S+/Towel seem to have no arguments against them in the thread, so I'm happy with that.

Thread hijack time:

Decide on a location for this thing, say that 6 or more of you are interested, and it's going to happen.

I guess I just thought that there were so many Kakumei-esque charts than there actually are.  Okay, I'm now with the opinion that Random/Mirror should be allowed.  Anything that disqualifies scores (5key, auto-scratch, S-random) shouldn't be though.

For the IIDX division, I think a card format like DS1/SC06 with everyone playing the same set has worked before, and is my choice for format.  I do not think picking your own songs would work that well.  It basically would come down to who is really good (or gets really good at) at a few charts, and not who is overall the best player.

I'm with the card format overall (i.e. for DDR/ITG as well), for the reasons in the last paragraph.  It just has so much more strategy and depth to it, and requires so much more thought than "Pick the songs you're the best at".  The card format required you to know your relative skill level on every song.  IMO, the format of picking your own songs is pretty boring, and encourages nothing more than getting good at the same few songs.

Kevin> I really don't think I'd be up for a DDREX tech tourney.  We've already had about 80,000 of those, and it would be really boring to see AAA every 99 out of 100 songs.

If DS3 is at Acme (please God let it be), then rent a room and do it there.

AC tournaments actually require bill's permission, and a lot more effort.

I'll go, and maybe contribute a little something to the pot (won't enter; I sux), as long as it's not too far from Po.

Is Issaquah area (like 20 mins from seattle) area too far?

Depends.  If I can carpool with someone, probably not.

Also, I can't really think of anything suitable to throw in for a 6-person tourney.

A 60-person tourney, I might put in a modded BM controller or something.

Maybe just a $10 DTG gift piece-of-paper.
"Card" would be an overstatement; we ain't wastin' money on that shit.

Songs should be chosen on random, it's really the fairest way to go.  If difficulty restrictions are desired, have someone whip up a program to choose at random a song of difficulty range x-y or something.
AC or CS really doesn't matter so whatev on that point.

OK, I guess 6 people is enough. Now what I'd like to know is who voted yes and who voted no. If the tournament's going to be stupid and unbalanced (read: James vs. all noobs as opposed to James, Jerrad, the other Kevin, and maybe tada and tony at least being there), I'd probably wait until there's more interest.

Also, would you rather play together or solo? I have a widescreen CRT, so it's fully possible to play together.

What would you be willing to pay as an entry fee? Would you rather make this a free tournament, just for fun?

Is Fall City way too hard to get to?

I said yes
I would rather play solo
~$10 for entry but make it low enough that people would actually play. Or zero.  I'd rather for prizes since I have a decent shot but whichever, really.
I don't know where Fall City is

This is a map from Marysville to Redmond-Fall City Road. I obviously changed the end address, but basically it's about 5 minutes from Tada's house.

Entry fee of $5, SC 06 format, song selections done by darkmage's algorithms?

I'm up for anything as far as entry fee goes, darkmage's algorithms are random song selection with diff restrictions and some weighting I forget but that should work...

what is the rules from SC 06 though?

Basically each player plays two preset songs, and the EX totals are added. After all players have played a round, the lowest scoring player is eliminated. The difficulties progressively increase from 1* to 11* (maybe a 12 or two) over the course of the tourney.

I fail 5's. :B

So, while I voted yes, I'd only concievably participate if there were a n00bs bracket, which is waaaay unlikely  with a 6 or 7-person tournament. ;P
