October 03, 2009, 04:10:41 PM - ORIGINAL POST -

Apologies in adavnce if I'm barking up the wrong tree.

I'm considering purchase of an old 7th mix machine and the owner said it was recently pulled from the Acme Bowl, presumably in this area. Is there anyone out there who can give me a report on the status of the machine? I'm not worried about sensors, I can shop the pads and replace them easily enough. I'm more concerned about wiring issues (random resets, screen glitches, pausing) and the condition of the monitor. Was it still crisp and bright? Any warping or degaussing issues?

If possible, anyone who can verify that it's a Japanese cab and not Korean would be great, but I may be asking too much already.

Thanks!

Yes it is, and I'm thinking of buying it. I contacted the owner, who said I should ask questions regarding the machine's condition here since it's usually the players who are in tune with how good a machine really is. As and owner and more than casual player, I can fix most problems, but dealing with sketchy PCBs or recalcitrant monitors are not my favorite things to fix.

I played on it last weekend and it was fine aside from pad issues so you should be okay.

when i played on it, it was great. No pad misses or anything. But then this was like 3 months ago

It's not in the best condition I've seen a DDR machine in, but it works. The only two things I feel worth noting are:

1) The screen isn't very crisp and seems a bit blurry and dark. It might need replacing soon if a good degauss doesn't fix it.

2) The machine looks worse than it actually is. I wouldn't be surprised if this thing was originally a 3rd mix with how beat-up it looks.

If I end up getting this cab, it's gonna get one hell of a custom makeover, that's for sure.

What do you mean by worse than it actually looks? The pads work fine, are you just saying the cabinet graphics are fading and such? because everything worked fine in terms of buttons and pad sensors working for me when I played.

You're right, what I said didn't really come out right. What I meant to say that the machine runs great, but the outward appearance is kind of below-par IMO.

I put down the things that I felt someone spending $2000+ on a machine would care about. I didn't say the machine was crap, I just wanted the buyer to know what the screen was like. He asked specifically to know the condition of the monitor, so I informed him. I felt it would be good for us to be as frank about it as possible. The machine's decals are fading and the first time I saw this cabinet I wasn't expecting great things, but the machine worked better than I thought. He said that he's not concerned about shopable problems like pads and sensors, so I figured he might like to hear about the few things like aesthetics.

Think of it this way, if you're in the market for a used car, you mostly care about how well it runs, but if it's got some superficial damage, or the paint job is faded and patchy, that's going to impact how much you're willing to drop on it.

Nice, trying to scare away potential customers.

Jon, is there a way to make it so I can ignore this guy without a lobotomy? I'm cool with everyone else on this forum, but this guy is the internet equivalent of nails down a chalkboard.

Just my two cents - I didn't really have too much of a problem with this machine, just a couple of weak sensors at any given time. But, as far as how old this machine is... I can tell you that I played on it at Narrows as early as 2002, and that was when 6th or 7th (I don't remember which) was already there - this was a 5th mix at the time.

I dunno, every forum needs a good troll. I kind of miss JSB from the old days, though...

My $.02, I don't agree every forum needs a troll.

More like every troll needs a forum.

Suko, I'm on your side for what it counts.

I was being perfectly on topic. It's not your bandwidth either. Either way your post comes off as I stated. Opinions are opinions, and just because you don't like one doesn't mean it isn't correct.  And superficial damage is not what matters most when it comes to a DDR machine. Making it look like a worse deal than it is to a REPUTABLE COMMUNITY MEMBER (Snooj runs recall) is retarded. TBH screen is not as much of an issue as the cabinet being Korean. Our Tilt has a Korean machine and it has had all sorts of problems (voltage problems anybody?). Above all he never asked about the appearance of the machine, so your post is taking a jump and actually putting a negative in the equation when it's a total non-issue. Just don't be a retard and I won't comment on your posts, that simple.

And yeah, JSB was a good player as well as a really funny poster.

dude we get it. You have a valid point. It's ok.
Besides, suko acknowledged that his comment came out wrong anyways.

Snooj, take my advice as you will. I'm sure most of these people will vouch that I'm not blowing lies in your face. I own an ITG dedicab, so this machine probably appears "worse" to me than it would the average player. That being said, I don't think that Iori has ever played on this machine, and as such, I suggest you listen more to those of us who use it regularly.

Again, you don't have to take my word for it, but since I've been playing DDR in arcades since 2002, and I helped repair the local machines while going through college, I'd like to think I know a thing or two about these games.

Btw, to find out if it's Korean or not, I'd contact Bill (the seller)directly. That would probably be the best (perhaps the only) way to find out.

Suko, I'm on your side for what it counts.
Thanks mate. I appreciate the gesture.

The machine runs solidly, but the screen is really dark and warped on the right side (the 2p right arrow is really skinny).

Thanks for all the comments, guys. Everything is helpful! As a previous owner/op and still a current fan, I can mostly weed out what's important. Although I'm not concerned about the cosmetic condition of the cabinet, comments about it won't sway my opinion. I'm no God of the machine, but I'm experienced enough to feel out what people are saying and get a good idea of the machine's condition. Problem now is the the auction closes tomorrow night and I'm still not 100% positive the machine will work out for me.

Also, I don't run DDRecall anymore, it transfered hands to Ranatalus from Ohio about a year ago. My life spiraled off in another direction for a while, but it doesn't mean I love DDR any less. I sold my arcade, Power Up, to Andy at TGA, and then TGA has some troubles of its own, and then nearly every arcade in Maine shut down, and now if you want to play DDR in Maine you have to go to a bowling alley. A new arcade opened up in the local mall, but they can't get their shit together enough to get DDR so I'm trying to get a machine and get them to host it. I'm halfway down the road (the boss was into it when I spoke to him but he wants to chew it over a bit more).

Really, deep down, I just want to play The Whistle Song on an arcade cab again. :-)

And less farther down is the feeling that Suko should really sell me that dedicab. :-)

At the point, the thing that bothers me the most is the condition of the CRT. Sounds like some warping and/or lack of clarity, which sounds like a bit of work to be done before it's in top shape. I already expect to shop the pads, but I'm not thrilled about CRT work. Anyone else think it's not pristine?
