UFO catchers were huge for me, because I was REALLY good at them.  It's not like those shitty redemption games over here that you hardly win, and if you do the prize it worth literally 25 cents.  These were somewhat harder to win, but enough people played it that operators recouped money -- and I'm talking the kind of prizes I could turn around on yahoo auctions for 2200 yen -- for something that cost me 5 credits (500 yen) max.  I still have an extra 12(?) inch Vegeta doll that auctioned for the $25 range 5 years ago if anyone wants it. I'll ask $25 for it /plug

Also, the variety of games is way more fun in Japan, I don't know why.  There are SHITLOADS of redemption games (not tickets... I've never seen that kind of system over there).  There are of course "medals," which is sort of like gambling except you can't redeem for cash.  You use tokens to win more tokens or spend it all.  It was just way too much fun.  Whereas over here, there's ticket games that I play just because I'm good at it or in the rare case that it is fun, and bemani.  That's seriously about it.

Tada> where in Japan are you going?  If in the kanto area I can point you to some fun arcades/other attractions.

Ticket games here are lame and you can't win. And if you do win, you win tootsie rolls. Is there a single arcade here in WA (or the surrounding area) with actual redemption games worth playing?

Pachinko, this thing sucks your life as quickly as it sucks your cash.  Its appetite is insatiable

I know what you mean... my uncle used to have one of these things in his basement.  So glad I didn't have to pay any $.

I am probably going to Japan sometime this spring/summer (most likely summer)... I'll let you guys know what it's like over there from my perspective.  Hopefully I'll be able to live there someday (I have reasons outside of Bemani too; hell, even outside video games).  I really am working to make it happen.  It's not just an "it would be cool if it happened" thing like it had been up until last year; this is looking more reasonable every day.  The way things go for me, I'll probably be stuck here forever, though.

Most people get their start over there through an English teaching company; I worked for GEOS Corporation myself.  If you want more info just PM me.

I'd imagine it would be within there, but not 100% sure.  My family still has to plan things out, and I still have to get over fears of not knowing enough Japanese and being hated for being a foreigner.

Just don't be stupid or creepy and the womens keep rolling in

No, seriously, they (young Japanese people) love foreigners, especially if they speak just enough Japanese to get by.  Also, a lot of middle aged Japanese people are capable of basic English but pretend they don't know a word.  I don't know why.

Crap, now I'm afraid I know too much... Tongue The way I see it, I am far past the bare-bones survival mark, but I guess I just get the impression that I don't know enough because trying to understand TV Japan at this point is like playing 冥 [a] for me.

AIDSFACE

That's it, I'm going to waterfront tomorrow. Acme'll be back on my list once I realize I'm at a wall with pump and can't play any better.

every redemption game is worth playing for little kids. they don't know any better. and once they get old enough to realize it's pointless to play them, there's plenty more little kids just starting to go to arcades and play them. that's why so many other arcades around the country use a bunch of redemption games to fund purchases of new real arcade games.

At narrows, the ticket games suck, but some of the prizes aren't bad (DVDs, mediocre PS2 games)

It's still probably much cheaper just to buy those items for real.

Back on topic, DM's screen really threw me off.  I missed many a green note because they were so hard to see.

Also, if some idiot is asking how to play to the person playing in the middle of a song, AND covering up part of the screen in the process, could one of us kindly kick their ass if another one of us is present?

Once again, anyone called the Masterman vending # yet RE: the green color issue?  You guys would get it fixed quicker that way.  I would call, but I wasn't having a problem with it.

On top of the green cathode being really dim, the drummania bass pedal completely stopped working for me in the middle of the first set I played today. You have been warned.

Did you manage to report it? If not, I'll look up the # right now and call it myself.

EDIT: No one responded to this, but I'll be going to ACME this evening and I'll call and report it if it's problem.

Just an update,
Drummania is working fine at ACME.  Don't know if anyone called or not, but the problems are fixed.  Also, the Green was not giving Zach, Mike, or myself any problems this evening, so that must have been fixed as well.

Aww, man, I saw "update" as "upgrade" at first. Sad

So at ACME last night there was this annoying fucker wearing some sort of final fantasy necklace thing and ugly pants.  I'd guess he's probably 19 or 20 and living in his mom's basement or something.

He asked me if he can shadow so I just said "okay" and he did.
Then it was Amber's turn (coin up on machine and everything), and he asks if he can go with her, and she says no, she'd rather play by herself.
Then he goes on to bitch about how it's a public machine and how "no, I want to play by myself" is far less courteous than is "I want to play with you (even though it's not my turn)."  He eventually pulled out the "I'm stronger than you, I've been in TaeKwanDo for 10 years" card and I just shook my head.  We argued for like 10 minutes but he kept saying the same thing over and over again.  Of course, towards the end he uses the popular "well I only haev 75 cents left now and I have to go soon so would you let me play" argument.  Also something about how no arcade he's gone to ever had a side unused if someone was playing.

Here is something he said, almost verbatim:
"Which do you think is more rude?  'I want to play by myself, because I want to,' or, 'it's a public machine and it's a complete waste to have this side unplayed, would you let me play with you?'" (yes, with all that spin on the statements, and yes he completely put aside the fact that he acknowledged that he was second in line when he put his coin up).
I mean it's cool that he asked, but to keep persisting after someone says no, and to keep going on and on, is just ridiculous.

yah that guy was pretty bad.  He could have just shut up and waited for Amber to play and then played through his turn and maybe another in the time it took him to argue

Yeah, I was there last night but fortunately after that argument took place.  Pantsu filled me in on it though.

It's pretty bad that he threatened her with TaeKwonDo skillz though (no matter how laughable); I'm glad it didn't get any more serious than that or the management might have had to step in.

Management.

He was like "what is the management going to do, kick me out?" and "the arcade owner bought the machines for public use and intended both sides to be played at all times."

When I said "well, there are 7 people here, 5 of them being me and my friends, who also are here way more often than you, and also know the staff, including security rather well.  Who are they going to believe?" to which he kept repeating all his stupid shit.  Also I said "I know the person who owns this machine.  We're pretty good friends with him, and the machine was in part bought for [our contingency, whatever phrase i used to describe that i forget]," and he says "yeah, for the public"

:rolleyesssssss

his girlfriend didn't look very comfortable being there
