WHAT

Godammit I want a tourney. Why can't we have one exactly? Just a quick 8-person tourney wouldn't be hard. I mean hell:

BBH
discovolante
Phylicia
Steven
Dancing Tofu
Zeppy Gorilla
Kyrandian
Noah

THAT'S EIGHT RIGHT THERE I MEAN COME ON

I should pull a rocket launcher out of my ass and kick all your silly little white asses. >D

Fuck yeah I'm coming to the get-togethers.
And just 'cause I don't have my computer doesn't mean I don't have access to the interwebs, it just means I can't be on for 26 hours a day. ;P

you need to pick a qualifier, do it.

also I move we make the tourney double-elimination. longer play that way. maybe bump the fee to $2.

ChilliumBromide

WHAT DO YOU THINK I AM A FUCKING BAG OF MONEY.
$1 to play qualifier, $2 for those who qualify.
It would be pretty lame to pay $2 and not even play beyond the qualifier.

Double elimination sounds coo'.

Qualifier:
Shining Polaris (Beginner)
AAAA it on Extreme to qualify. ;P

The real qualifier:
Lawnmower Ate Library (Heavy) ['cause it will highlight everyone's bad timing, but I don't think any of us will humiliate ourselves on it]
For those who don't know, l'amour et liberte.

discovolante

I think the qualifier will just determine placing unless we get more than 8 people.

And, I dunno, I'd prefer something other than L'amour. But it's pretty much your tournament.

Well, I think it's the only song that Noah and Steven can pass that everybody else (myself excluded) won't all AAA or low SDG.

Left side isn't that bad. Up arrow is a little sketchy.

Yeah, I was exaggerating. It's just the up arrow that's a little sketch.

Ok, so I'm going to make a quick draft of how the difficulty will progress for the losers and winners bracket. The way I see it, the losers bracket will progress a little slower in terms of difficulty, but the payoff for playing harder songs in the winners bracket is you have to win less songs in the final round. (This is sort of like what D2SSR was like for Godai v.s. JJK, as was NAT'05 for LilQ v.s. Damien)

So:

Qualifier: L'Amour et Liberte (determines where the eight players are ranked from top to bottom, #1 v.s. #2, #3 v.s. #4 etc.)
Round 1: Best out of three, 6-7 footers. Four move to winner's bracket, four move to loser's bracket.
Round 2:
Losers- Best out of three again, 7 footers. Two players will be eliminated.
Winners- Best out of three, 7-8 footers. Two players will move to losers bracket.
Loser's Round:
Losers- Both losers from the winners bracket square off. 8 footers. One will be eliminated.
Both winners from the losers bracket will square off. 7-8 footers. One will be eliminated.
Semi-Finals:
Losers- Best out of five, 8-9 footers. One player will be eliminated.
Winners- Best out of five, 8-9 footers. One player will be eliminated. (Now one winner v.s. one loser)
FINALS: Best out of five, anything goes. Winner's bracket winner only has to win twice in order to claim victory, whlie the loser's winner must get three out of five.

I'll print this and bring it, it can be tweaked obviously. For one thing I could see the result of the qualifier being 1 v.s. 5, 2 v.s. 6, etc. That's how it was IIRC at that SN/ITG2 tournament at Tukwila.

THIS'LL BE SOOOO FUN

I just wanted to say again how I enjoyed this event today, and am glad to have finally met all of you! Smiley

I feel bad that I ran out of change in the latter part of the tournament today, as initially I was assuming this would be a more simple elimination tournament (I wasn't on late enough to see Ethan's well thought-out tournament plan) and, with me on a tight budget right now, I always bring small quantities of change in public, and figured a couple of dollars would sustain me through the whole thing.

Anyway, I regret too much that happened and had to abruptly discontinue, as though some of you were mentioning sparing some change, naturally I just can't accept such offers, as I felt it would be taking advantage of others. Perhaps I am just oversensitive on this sort of thing, but it just wouldn't feel right to me to play off of someone else's hard-earned money, and that's why I abruptly wished y'all good luck and left (also, it went on longer than we had anticipated, and I had some reading for a few college classes to finish)

I also apologize if any of you felt I was aloof. I don't mean to appear distant and self-possessive, and it had nothing to do with any of you. I'm just naturally shy and more of the introverted type, and in any social situation it takes me a few times to get used to others just like getting used to the temperature of a swimming pool when you're first going for a swim, and then I become very comfortable and much more open. Smiley

Thanks for making me feel welcome today, as well as being supportive and offering some helpful tips in a friendly manner when I struggled on the arcade pad today (I'm so used to my soft pad at home and have rarely played on arcade pads so far that it was a much different experience for me today) It was truly a pleasure meeting you all, and I am looking forward to future gatherings as well! Smiley

Sincerely,
Noah Eaton

The tournament itself was indeed disorganized, but you did a good job planning it out in detail.

The problem I suppose ended up being that word just came out too little too late. Like I said, I wasn't on late last night or early this morning to read the tournament agenda, as I imagine was likely the case with some other participants as well.

Congratulations on your SDG achievement and valiant effort, by the way. Congratulations to everyone for a generally disorganized, yet still enjoyable tournament. Smiley

Disorganised?  You should have been at K-con.
It was about as organised as your average riot.

Anyway, I'm really feeling gung-ho on getting my StepMania machine running ASAP all of the sudden.
It would be really awesome to have these get-togethers on a machine with 900 songs (and counting), a high-def flatscreen TV, the most pimp pads in the universe (with 1/2" lexan panels; none of that weak 3/8 plexi shit), and something more significant than a railing and a 12 foot drop to our left. ;P

Anyway, when I get this shit running, I want all you guys to send me your SM collections, so I can add those in.  I'll also make profiles for everyone, 'cause I'm cool like that.

I'll just need a place to put it, and we'll be good to go. D:

fuck yeah it is

I apparently got a really good draw because there's no way I'm better than Wes at this game.

I sure do enjoy that special "Director's Cut" of the alternate credits after One More Extra Stage!

Good:

>overall layout wasn't bad.
>good price? I liked it.
>fairly good turnout. would've been better if either Eesh showed up earlier or Matt DECIDED TO FUCKING PLAY.
>pads are rad
>Good qualifier, I move the next one be The Reflex.

Bad:

>No Art, no freeplay. This can be remedied by moving it to Saturdays. This Saturday was just 100% inopportune for me.
>turnout was actually not that great. contradictions yay.
>Matt is a gay

So yeah. Suggestions are heck welcome.

Suggestion 1) They replace those shitty Plexiglas panels with Lexan.  It's, like, $60 at most for 4 panels which will last forever. (this isn't really a suggestion to you, it's a suggestion to Art)

Suggestion 2) Get this better organised so it doesn't take 3 hours.

Suggestion 3) Those who do not play should be castrated.

Suggestion 4) Sandbagging = we break your legs.

Did I miss anything?

I think it would be very unlikely for an arcade to go out of their way to turn on free play / event mode just for people wanting to have a little tournament. As the other Matt pointed out, Ground Kontrol is after all a place of business, and they don't make money by putting games on free play. I think it'd be a more likely scenario if they were getting a cut of the entry fees, but to do that you would have to considerably raise the price of the entry fee... and that would scare more people away from entering, which means the tourney wouldn't happen. Catch-22.

I agree with many of the critiques offered this evening. Turnout was more or less what we expected, though one can surely wish for double what we got, even as narrow and congested as the walkways on the second floor can be. And the qualifier was more than fair.

The Plexiglas panels were just mentioned here, and I do agree with that primary critique. Plexiglas is ideal certainly for a cortortionist who enjoys fitting ones entire body inside a twenty-inch box made of it to delight passer-bys on street malls and gain contributions from, but for anything based on the purpose of longevity, you need a stronger glass.

And although in my imagination I yearn ever so strongly for local arcades with free play everyday, I have to agree that with any place in business, there has to be a small price to pay, or else these machines, and arcades in general, would cease to exist and then the availability of the machines would be relegated back to that small room behind the snack counter at the bowling alley, if anywhere.

Paying $25 an hour to have an arcade host and arrange an event is costly, respectfully, in its own right, but the flip-side is costly as well for community.

Sincerely,
Noah Eaton
