There are basically two types of trolling.
Here i'll show them both.
Say there is a forum with a debate about if a virus is living or not.
The "good" troll would say something along the lines of:
"Why don't we look at what makes a thing living or not instead of restating the obvious."
the "bad" troll would say something that would keep the discussion in a stasis. I think that when people ask questions it is trolling, but in the end it can actually help dig deeper where otherwise you would not have delved into the subject. Trolling is a useful and natural human mechanism that can often ask "why". Some just ask a "why" that locks a discussion or starts acrimony. People may not even have the best of intentions of asking why, but you can gain a greater fufillment from one's bad intentions then from silence.

I agree. Another thing I like to add is that bad trolls are typically douchebags for no reason

I take it that post there was an example of the latter? Tongue
but yes, I suppose asking a question would make a subject more interesting, but why?

Neat, except your example of a "good troll" isn't a troll attempt. It's just attempting to drive the conversation to a more productive end. By definition, there's no such thing as a "good troll" using the sense of the word "good" you're implying. The closest thing would be a Devil's Advocate post, which if used correctly is really just there to argue the point of the other side to get you to think of both sides of the situation in a more objective manner.

Countdown to somebody thinking this is a troll post starts at T-6 six posts.

I think trolling is intentionally asking questions or making statements that the troll is aware will cause a strong negative sentiment/reaction and usually a situation that is not conducive to productive argument.

You could argue there is a "bad" and "good" troll with Machiavellian logic, but...

Devil's advocate is trolling. If people are on the "inside" of devil's advocate posts then it's definately trolling. More often then not, serious discussion is trolling and not real discussion on the net.

Either way, even if someone trolls with ill-will, you can always gain from it.

I think, unfortunately, the role of devil's advocate is used as a cover by trolls more than it is as an effective means of producing discussion.

Devil's Advocate is only a good addition to discussion when the person was ALREADY INVOLVED in the conversation.

Someone jumping in just to play Devil's Advocate and then leaving once they've gotten their jollies is a troll.

I think there's only one real definition of a "good troll" and that's when it's absolutely hilarious. For example, a thread about ferrets I read recently (do not ask why, I'm not even sure myself) got entirely derailed by one post that simply read "Tuberats suck, you bunch of girls."

O! the shitstorm.
O! the hilarity.

Troll is a derogatory term.  It's like saying there's a good kind of slut when you say "Good Trolls".

You "good trolls" are simply cynical, witty, and critical people.  Trolling in its true form is something that doesn't directly contribute to the topic.  Of course, it can be funny, but generally, it's only "good" if it's in response to a topic that's pretty much trolling.

For a good example of trolling, visit the Chatterbox on Gaia Online.  There, you will find every kind of trolling there is, including zeppy's "Good Trolling", if you look hard enough.
It's all shit, but some of it's good shit.

That's where you ask yourself where that line is between trolling, and MASSIVE POSTWHOREDOM! (bump)
Good site. Forums suck ass, unless you're part of a decent guild.

lol, I troll the hell out of Gaia on a daily basis.

Of course, I generally only visit the fighting game forum, the DDR sticky and not much else.  GD and chatterbox are insanely retarded.

I'm probably already in it, I think.  If so, then they're pretty dead.

Yeah, I have, like, 15565 posts.

Which is alarmingly close to the price of a DDR SuperNOVA cabinet, last I checked. O_O

Not to make me feel like an old man any more than I generally do (yay for 23 going on 45), but that looks like the kind of shit my little sister would be involved in. Then again, she is about the same age as Diggit.

Yeah, the forums are balls and all, but I occasionally entertain myself there.

It's not as fun anymore though.  It was fun when I was flaming people my age and older, but now everybody's younger than me.  I just don't get the same entertainment out of trollin' younger people.

The guild system is decent.  My guild's pimp and a half.  The Spelling Nazis guild was surprisingly chill last I checked, and I get a kick out of the DDR guild.

The DDR guild's fun. I logged onto that site for the first time in like, 4 months (cos it's blocked at my house and school V.V) and they have gaia towns up and running ^^. It's really fun to mess around with people there. BTW, I added you and peaches as friends.
