~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[size=18]Guitar Hero 3 - Limit 64 players
[/size]
Signups open when Sakura-Con does!
Please sign up ONLY if you will be playing, not if you might be. This is to ensure everybody who has signed up will not have to wait for you during the event.
EVENT BEGINS AT 11AM SHARP SATURDAY!
We will be using the XBOX 360 version for this tournament.
Players will be placed randomly in one of four 16-player groups. These groups will be bracketed, with at least two groups running concurrently.
Group Play - PRO FACE OFF
-Each match, players will be given a random group of 3 songs to play. Both players choose one they wish NOT to play, and the remaining song is played.
-Players will agree on sides.
-Players must play at least MEDIUM, and must agree on a difficulty. If no agreement is reached, MEDIUM must be played.
-Highest score wins. If still tied, most successful notes wins. If there is still a tie, one of the two songs not chosen will be played on BATTLE.
Semifinals and Finals
-Each of the 4 pool winners will be placed in a 4-player bracket.
-Semifinal and 3rd place matches are now best-of-3; Finals will be best-of-5.
-Players will take turns selecting songs, A coin flip will determine who selects first.
-HARD and EXPERT will be the only difficulties used.
-If there is a 1-1 tie (or 2-2 in the final round), a final song will be played on EXPERT to determine the winner; this song will be randomly chosen.
-Players will be allowed to use one 45-second 'time-out' each match to use between songs to rest.
-Highest score wins. If still tied, most successful notes wins. If still tied, longest note streak wins. If still tied, the player who chose the song must choose another.
General Rules
-No warm-ups or casual play will be allowed during the tournament.
-Quiet will be asked for when matches are going on so the players are not distracted.
-Players are encouraged to bring their own guitar controllers, however if controllers are modified in any way, the organizer (I, Jon) must approve of them before being used in the event.
-Any player using an illegally modified or otherwise unapproved modified controller will be disqualified.
-Players cannot use regular XBOX 360 controllers for this tournament.
-Any judgment call that otherwise occurs during the tournament will be made by the organizer, and is final.
-Have fun!
There was actually a CS DDR tournament last year, and I think there might be another one if someone donates nice pads. Solomon Choe was nice enough to let us use his CFs last year.
Worse case scenario, I'll see if I can get the kcon CF's up there.  I could work on getting them in shape over the course of the week prior.
That would actually be pretty sweet. Even if Jon doesn't go for a CS DDR tourney, it would be nice to have pads for a free play setup.
I don't think they allow Stepmania at the con.  I remember them not allowing it last year.
and I'll run it off StepMania.
Stepmania hasn't been allowed in the gaming rooms for years along with other simulators (and pirated games), since allowing stuff that circumvents giving people money makes the sponsors feel uneasy.
StepMania's more legal than any of the console gaming; it's actually liscensed for public and corporate use.  Console games are liscensed only for private use.  The issue is with songs.  You can't use songs and graphics you aren't liscensed to use if:
1. You make money off of the machine, either by direct charge or advertising its presence.
2. You use it for a public application.  I haven't read the Sakuracon bylaws, but if they're anything like Kumoricon's, people are paying membership dues, not event admission, so it's technically a private event on a legal basis.
Also, if that's a legal issue, I could use the same setup to run DDR 5th Mix off MAME.  It would be 100% legal because I do have access to a legitimate 5th Mix ROM. (which is also why it would have to be 5th Mix)
You're preaching to the choir. We know that, it's the Con staff who decide, not us. Write them a letter if you want to make a difference.
Yeah, your best bet would be to email the convention staff about it.  Like people have said, theres a lot of legal issues involved with an event this scale, same with PAX.
Okay, I wasn't sure where it was being blocked out in the heirarchy.  I'll look into doing that this weekend.
Basically, the higher ups don't want to take any risks.  The Sakuracon forums have wordfilters on evil words like "torrent," because they don't want to offend potential sponsors by letting members talk about anything that could be linked to piracy.
Haha oh cool it's going on at the same time as the SSBM tourney?  Looks like I'll either be running very frantically from one room to another or I won't be entering Pop'n, oops
Looks like I won't be entering pop'n, too. Oh well. Hopefully it starts a bit late and I can rush back to WSCTC by 1:15. :/
I just spent 10 hours today rebuilding my TX-1000's into a 2.7", 80 pound beast with easily adjustable sensitivity.
Yes, I built two shitty pads into one hella pad.
It's fucking ghettoliscious.  I'm bringing it up tomorrow and you faggots will enjoy it.
lol run it off mame.
dude, it runs like ass (if it even runs lol)
anything that depends on stringent timing is not good to do in mame.
I don't appreciate being called a prick.  As for the tournaments, I don't really know why theres no DDR/ITG tournament.  I'm just donating my time to run the Pop'n tournament, I figure people should have fun with that.  If someone wants to host a DDR/ITG tournament, I'm sure the gaming staff would allow it.
lol prick go suck off pete rifk
Copy-Paste from my post on Sakuracon 4rumz:
Sakuracon 2008 DDR Competition
Double Elimination, 16-person w/ qualifier
TIME: 10:00 am, Sunday [please be here by 9:30 to help set up and confirm that everyone is present.]
LOCATION: Music Gaming Room (room 619, level 6)
QUALIFIERS (do one or some or all of the following FIVE songs): Look to the Sky [DDR MAX], The Shining Polaris [DDR MAX2], Un Deux Trois [DDR EXTREME2], Love Shine [DDR SuperNOVA], A thing Called LOVE [DDR SuperNOVA2]
***Please record the sum total of NON-PERFECTS (greats, goods, almosts, boos) and N.G.'s and do not lie. If you qualify when you should not, you WILL be publicly ridiculed. (yes, I'll be able to tell if you're full of crap)***
RULES (basic): Double-elimination, best of three (P1 choice, P2 choice, random), Dance Point system (P/M = 5, Gr = 4, OK = 5, everything else = 0), Home versions, Red Octane Afterburner Pads. Marvs optional.
The Standard bracket was phenomenal; I look forward to getting beat by all of you next time we meet! There were some marvellously close matches, such as the one between Sean, who scored 1115 points on a particular song, and Susie who scored 1119 on the same. For those of you who aren't super math whizzes, that's less than a .4% difference.
Unfortunately, while getting the game rooms packed up, I did lose the entire bracket for the Standard tournament, but great job to SARIA (1st, tie), MISHA (1st, tie), PALADIN (3rd, tie), and NEVETS (3rd, tie).
The Heavy tournament was by far the most enjoyable one I've participated in. My matches with Darryl and Smile were both exhillarating, and Kon really pushed me too. Everyone who entered was great and displayed a good attitude even when they lost. I really appreciate that people were able to get up, play their round, and let the next person go. We were able to get the entire Heavy bracket of 16 participants (double-elimination) finished in less than 3 hours, including pad maintainance, which is nearly two hours less than what the single-elimination, 19-person tournament at Kumoricon '07 took to complete. I did manage to pull first, but Smile had me on the edge with a black flag (one great, full combo) on Ecstasy to my three greats after almost beating me at my own song of choice, Healing Vision ~Angelic Mix~. Darryl, who earned 3rd place, really had me worried when he beat me on Healing-D-Vision, which we both managed to get "A"s on. I got lucky though, and on the random selection of the tie-breaker song, we landed on Rainbow Rainbow, which I reeled in as the first AAA of the tournament. Darryl got another perfect AAA later in the tournament in his match against Kon, playing Rockafeller Skank. Great job! Ahn, a friend from back here in Portland who also came up to kick butt at DDR with me, pulled 4th place. Overall. He also managed to eliminate Duck in the second round, after she knocked him into the losers bracket in the first round. Great job!
Some notable events:
Sean vs. Susie, Round 1, song 1, Standard: 1115 to 1119
Ahn, personal SDG #1 (7 greats), True Love (correct me if I'm wrong here please!)
Darryl, AAA, Rockafeller Skank
Dancing Tofu, AAA, Rainbow Rainbow
Domi vs. Ahn, Round 3, song 1, Heavy: 3 points difference
Looks like I'll have to come back in 2009 to regain my status as In The Grove Champion.
TL;DR:
HEAVY:
1st: Dancing Tofu
2nd: Smile
3rd: Darryl
4th: Ahn
Hon. Mentions: Domi, Kon
STANDARD:
1st: Misha/Saria*
3rd: Paladin/Nevets**
*Saria was able to demonstrate that she could beat Misha, but we had to get the Heavy tournament started before I could get the last few matches done and confirm it, so I gave each of them 100 Petal Points.
**For those of you who weren't at the tournament at GK last year, Nevets is steven with his shirt backwards, a finger mustach, and freestyling on x1 with no bar.
KDDR: I won't be playing in the tournaments for Kumoricon '08 or Sakuracon '09 because I'll be running them on purpose, but if you pull first at either, you're welcome to challenge my title. ;P
Check the much longer one on the Sakuracon forums. Tongue
zeppy,
There were actually two dudes right at my level, a lot of people right below my level, and one dude who would have killed me (2 greats on So Deep earlier during the con), but he didn't show for the tourney.
Pretty decent considering that nobody plays any more IMO.
