Hey everyone! You can find all the details for the event being updated constantly on AIJ. Please read through AIJ. Facebook also has details but they are not as up to date as AIJ. Here are all the links you guys should check out and read through.

In summary, if you want to enter, please purchase a venue ticket (as a console participant, $10) through the intel lanfest website and forward your confirmation e-mail to me (dorkwiz@gmail.com) to officially sign up. If you just want to spectate, you should still sign up because it comes with entry into other tournaments, casual gameplay fun, dinner on saturday, and a raffle ticket for crazy prizes.

ALSO, please let me know if you are interested in helping out with the tournament! It would be awesome if I had some volunteers. Here are the links:

----------------------------

HEY EVERYONE. So I want to run a stamina/speed tournament once or twice FOR FUN. I've had alot of evil idea for this little thing I'm planning, but here are just a couple things I was thinking of:

I was thinking of calling it: Western Burnout Weekend... Arrow Burnout, Stamina Burnout... I'm not sure...

I don't want to copy bearpocalypse's format completely, but I think thats a good base to start with maybe? I was thinking of forcing everyone to play at least one very inconvient time slot (for someone who works a 8am-5pm schedule, force them to play at 1am for their timeslot for the "hard mode" portion of the tournament)...

I was also thinking of possibly relocating my machine to some sort of venue if necessary? But I think as long as we don't have more than 15 people my apartment can accommodate enough people. I don't expect too many entrants, but if it does get big we can always relocate my setup to someone else's house or something. Maybe I could even ask intel if its possible to use the field house or something Tongue

I want people to push themselves as hard as possible. And get extremely exhausted. I want their to be a tournament style bracket + a time slot style to it possibly. I also want to challenge everyone with new unseen charts. Smiley Smiley Smiley

When do you guys think would be a good time for such a tournament? I was thinking february + july, or maybe just one in april/may?

Yes! We needed a tournament like this here!

In my opinion, it should be called "Westcoast Stamina or Die!"

As far as when to hold the tournament, we'd have to wait and see when people are free. The turnout shouldn't be to big, maybe 10 people. You can count me and Abbye in for sure, can't wait for this!

I've wanted to do something like this/hold something like this for a while. If you do it at your place that sounds chill, if you come to Portland then we can use two machines and have quite a bit more space. We'd have to work out lots of details though. Either way i'm in.

Having it at your place seems like a much better idea honestly, that way it will be more accessible to california players aswell! Smiley I can transport my dance pads in my hatchback, no need to rent a truck or anything.

Hey, I heard about this and thought I'd remind you that Sakuracon is typically in April and that's already usually a major tournament. You might try to put at least a little distance between the events. Just some thoughts  Smiley

Thanks for that advice Allan!

So at this point we are thinking/considering holding it in portland, since my setup is portable (haha portable to portland), so we can have 2 machines to play on Cheesy THIS WOULD BE SUPER EPIC. Me, Andy, and Karl are all going to be talking about this.

Would people be cool with this happening further south? This would also make it more accessible to players way way south! Cheesy

Hey guys. So we can hold this AT INTEL. AND INTEL WILL GIVE SMALL PRIZES TO WINNERS. If we don't do a stamina tournament at intel, we can at least do something. I personally think it should be a stamina/hard stuff tournament though Smiley Smiley

Here is the interest check thread on AIJ:

X Post from AIJ

I'm starting to feel more and more than a bearpocalypse type format for this probably isn't a good idea, simply because the machine is going to be near a ton of other games with tournaments being held in a bracket type fashion. I could still see a bearpocalypse type format working, however I do want the tournament to be fun to watch for spectators at the LANfest. There is interest in having a regular style tournament, and also doing a mods/weird stuff tournament aswell if thats what people prefer more but I'll have that discussion on the pnwbemani.net forums.

In my head, I feel like doing a bearpocalypse format, giving 1.5 hour time slots to people, and then doing a regular "top 16" side tournament would work out really well, something silly like a couples tournament for show. I'm not sure honestly yet haha. But I want to collect ideas and reach a decision soon.

So I think the main issue is going to be people showering honestly. We can do runs back to my apt. to get people to shower after playing. I don't think this will really be that much of an issues because its not like this is going to be a huge tournament. My place is 7 min. from intel.

Yes!

I'm looking forward to this tournament! I need to beast and prepare for this tournament!  Huh

I think this tournament should just be pure footspeed and stamina. But then again, maybe people would like to do mods/weird stuff.  Angry

As far as showering goes...I'm just hoping it won't be to much of a problem!  Embarrassed

I think this tournament should just be pure footspeed and stamina. But then again, maybe people would like to do mods/weird stuff.

Doubtful I'll be in proper condition for a stamina tournament in just under two months, but there does seem to be plenty of interest in purely targeting stamina to make that work out, so I'd advocate a stamina tournament being the primary event, unless a bunch of people jump out and say otherwise, even though I probably won't be entering as a result.

Definitely want to make sure we don't end up going all-stamina-all-the-time in tournaments, but given that Laura and I (and Ben for SPERGIN) make all the other tournaments, I don't think that's an issue.

Oh yeah, glad to offer some help with drafting up the rule set. Not up to date on all of the formats used in the rest of the ITG world so well, but I'm good at balancing out the rules to eliminate unintended bias and I'm very good at hardening a rule set against loopholes, so I'm happy to help edit once there's a draft.

Also, if you want to do the whole thing as a bracket format, while still making it utter stamina hell for the players, I have a general modification to the formats Laura and I have been using that might get the right effect. Players pick 3 songs each in advance (probably with the only restriction being no repeats). Player 1 picks a song from Player 2's card, then Player 2 from Player 1, just like the Try to Quad format, but instead of a third song tiebreaker, you revisit the cards and pick from the remaining ones. To keep things moving, the 5th song is the random tiebreaker instead, and matches are best-3-of-5, with one song on each card being thrown away. Later rounds (e.g. semi-finals and finals) can step it up a notch and play through the full cards (so, matches with truncated tennis scoring - if you have at least 3 points and are 2 points ahead of your opponent (so 3-0, 3-1, and 4-2 all win, but 3-2 and 2-0 don't), but if you get to the 7th song, you play a random tiebreaker and stop afterward (unless there's somehow a perfect tie after that, which would mean 3-3 with a tie on one song). It's a fair, open choice format that should drain everyone pretty hard. Also, 5 song matches still top out at like 15 minutes (unless there's stuff over 3 minutes long playable for the tournament), so you can still cycle through 10 player double elim. in like 6 hours tops. Just an idea I had - feel free to disregard.

I actually think I've figured out a format that will work very well for the sake of putting on a show + doing bearpocalypse style:

So I am going to release a prequalifier pack + a main tournament pack, but basically everything people play/score on will determine the order and pairings of warmups/competing pairs. It is essential that people really do submit scores of *some things* they play in order for me to determine the order of play, but essentially, my idea is to have timeslot pairings based on pre-determined skill ability so that the player up next can get a 45 minute warmup in (with reasonable song selection of the current for-score competitors choosing) before playing their real 45 minute set for tallying. This way, towards the end of each set, we will have a very awesome competition style going, and players warming up/actually playing will actually both pick songs (person warming up with get to pick fewer than the person actually competing). I'll have to find a way to make sure that sandbagging/stuff doesn't occur but I think a format like this strikes the balance of stamina/footspeed pushing after a good warm up, while STILL incorporating 1:1 action. What do you guys think? I'll be reposting this on facebook + AIJ.

I just wanted to say, despite the fact that I wasn't able to compete in the tournament this weekend, I had a wonderful time.  Grin

It was an amazing experience to be able to get to know everyone who participated on a deeper level and to watch and cheer for those who competed. I am truly thankful for those who supported me even though my health was failing and encouraged me to keep playing and pushing. I've got to admit, I was rather heart broken and disappointed that I wasn't able to play along with everyone.  Sad

Abbye and I both hope that we all can gather once again in the future to compete and push each others limits to the next level!  Roll Eyes
