IT'S CAME BACK
BEWARE IT AND PREPARE IT
S.P.E.R.G.I.N. 2
Brought to you by Laura (Laura) and Ben (sfxazure)
With help from Scott (Suko)
4 August 2012
Entry Fee: $5.00 if you preregister, $10.00 at the door.

Important: The tournament pack is now available for download here.

For those of you unawares, Ben and I ran a not-so-serious tournament last summer called S.P.E.R.G.I.N., which was a traditional double-elimination tournament with a pack made entirely of charts submitted by entrants.  It was awesome and fun, and we can't wait to do it again!  Once again, we need YOUR help to make it happen!

Changes from S.P.E.R.G.I.N.:
- Unlike S.P.E.R.G.I.N., this tournament will NOT be run at ACME.  Rather, Scott (Suko) has graciously offered to allow us use of his garage and private machine.  In order to ensure he does not regret this decision, we will not post his address publicly on the internet.  If you need it, please PM one of the organizers.

Notable things that haven’t changed:
- Songs must still be playable in a public space like ACME.  Although the tournament will be played in a private venue, most entrants only have access to a public machine for practice.
- Rules for passing the song you pick have not changed.  That is, “you pick it, you pass it” does not apply.

Phase One: Pre-registration and Stepchart Submission
Due Date: 1 July, 2012

Preregistration will begin immediately and will run until the end of Phase One.  Attendees who preregister will pay a discounted rate ($5.00 instead of $10.00.)  Preregistration will be handled through PMs to Ben/sfxazure, who will accept payment through Amazon Payments, PayPal, or in person.  To keep things organized, please use the title “SPERGIN Preregistration” for your PM.

You will have from today until July 1st to submit up to four songs (one stepchart each) to be included in the tournament pack. Please use this submission form, and make sure to identify yourself by name/forum name somewhere in the file.   We encourage you to create and submit new stepcharts, but any are fine as long as you had a hand in their creation.  Submitted songs/stepcharts will be rejected if they do not conform to the following rules:

1. The chart must be to a song no longer than three minutes and thirty seconds (3:30) in length.  There are many reasons for this, including but not limited to the fact that we have to keep the tournament moving and the fact that 3:30 is ACME's cutoff for a “long song.”  We don’t want people to have to pay more to practice some charts than others.

2. Songs must be appropriate for play in public venues such as ACME Bowl.  Please avoid profanity or find some way to work around it (clean versions, comedic censoring, etc.)  Any content deemed inappropriate for a public venue will be rejected.

3. Songs must be ITG Arcade Ready.  Details for preparing your songs can be found here.  If your song is over 2 minutes, DO NOT .OGG PATCH IT. Also, it is recommended that you test your file on Acme’s ITG machine before submitting it, as different machines have different syncing.

4. Stepcharts must have at least 50 hittable arrows.  We are all for exploring a wide range of difficulties, but please no “Beginner mode.”  While there may be ways to make an interesting chart with under 50 steps, it would increase the likelihood of ties and slow the tournament down.

We also reserve the right to reject a stepfile for unusual reasons, such as the file crashing StepMania.

Note:  If a song is rejected for any reason, you may submit a replacement; cleaned-up versions of rejected submissions can be submitted, as well as completely different songs/charts.  After a song has been accepted for the pack, it is finalized and can not be replaced or modified.

As soon as a stepchart is accepted into the pack, it will be made available for download at the bottom of this post.  This is because Ben and I will be entering the tournament ourselves, and we don’t want to gain an unfair advantage by viewing songs before they are released publicly.

By submitting charts to the tournament pack, you agree to enter the tournament.  While people who have not submitted stepcharts may enter, those of you who submit stepcharts must enter.  Because of this, we will not begin to evaluate stepcharts from any given entrant before they have preregistered for the tournament; consider your entry fee a form of collateral.

Phase Two: Practice

During this period of time, the organizers will combine your charts into a pack.  If the organizers feel that there are not enough new stepcharts on which to run a tournament, we will find some quick hack to fix this issue.  This should take about a week.  After this, the pack will be released and installed on the ACME machine, so that you may practice these charts at your leisure.  This should take about a month.

Phase Three: TOURNAMENT!
4 August 2012, 12:30 PM, Suko's place
Please note:  You will see the phrase “Because this is not intended to be a serious tournament...” many times.  This is because this is not intended to be a serious tournament, and is supposed to be for fun!   Please do not get too caught up in minor details.

This will be a double elimination event with room for up to 32 entrants.  Only songs from the S.P.E.R.G.I.N.2. pack will be playable in this tournament.

Seeding:  Because this is not intended to be a serious tournament, seeding will be random.  If you complain about this, we will make fun of you on the internet.

Matches:  High seed gets first choice of machine side or pick order.  The other choice goes to low seed.  Each player will then pick one song of their choice to play against the other player.   Whoever gets the highest percentage (as calculated by the machine) on a given song wins that song.  (You know how this works by now.)  If both players are tied at the end of two songs, a third song will be chosen from the S.P.E.R.G.I.N.2. pack by way of the ITG machine’s “random” function.  If both players are still tied, another random tiebreaker will be chosen until the tie is broken.

Song Selection:  Each player may only use a song as their “pick” once over the course of the tournament.  Because this is not intended to be a serious tournament, either player may fail any song throughout all tournament rounds with no additional penalty - once you fail, your percentage is “locked” as your score.

Level Caps:  Because this is not intended to be a serious tournament, there will be no level caps. Any chart may be picked at any time in the tournament, regardless of difficulty (or opponent, since seeing is random.)

Prizes:  Once preregistration ends and we have a better idea of how many entrants we will have, we will determine a prize structure based on 100% of the entry fees.

Please note that although the “IN” in “S.P.E.R.G.I.N.2.” does stand for “In the Northwest,” out of state players are still more than welcome to participate and submit stepcharts.

Has a link been posted to the entire SPERGIN 2 pack?

Sorry, not yet.  My goal is to get it on the ACME machine today.  Once I have something on the machine, I'll upload the zipped up pack.

Here is the pack.  Everyone, please download and use this pack, as it contains the most up-to-date version of each submitted song.  I tried to reupload songs that had changed individually, but may have missed some.  The uploaded pack is what we will be using for the tournament.

Jon and I didn't have any luck getting the songs on the ACME machine today.  I'll try again tomorrow morning.

The details, for those of you who care: We first got about half of the songs to show up by simply dropping the folder on the machine.  I have a list of the songs that showed up, but don't have any idea why some did and some didn't.  OGG/MP3, .old/.dwi/.ssc files seemed to have nothing to do with it.  After rebuilding the cache and removing the junk dotfiles OS X litters around, none of the songs in the pack showed up.  That's all we wanted to try for the day, since people started showing up by then to play.

Are you uploading them through the "Manage Packs" feature in OpenITG, or thru another way? If you haven't tried it yet, try the Manage Packs method and see if you get better results. Here's a REALLY terrible video a guy made that describes how it's done.

ITG crapocap Manage packs mini tutorial

Additional useful info:
http://r21freak.com/phpbb3/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=17240

Essentially:
1) Make a zip file containing /Songs/SPERGIN2/everything for spergin2
2) Name that zip whatever you want (probably SPERGIN2)
3) Make a folder called userpacks on the root of your USB
4) Put the ZIP in the userpacks folder you just made
5) Go to the Manage Packs option in the operator menu and transfer it over
6) It will take a while. Be patient.

We had attempted to upload the songs by simply dropping songs into the machine's AdditionalFolders/Songs directory.  I didn't know about "Manage Packs".  Looks useful!  I'd like to try it, but I won't have access to the operator menu tomorrow since I don't have a key to the machine.  I suppose I could try to hack in an input code for getting to the operator menu, but I won't have much time to work on this in the near future.  I'd rather not waste time hacking into the operator menu unless there's an easy way to do it.

Good news and bad news!

The good news is that all of the songs are on the ACME machine!  I just had to rebuild the cache one more time to make it work.

Bad news is at least one song doesn't have working stops/bpm changes.  I tested Tyrgannus's chart for My Love and found that none of the stops or bpm changes were working.  This is probably because it was built with a version of stepmania 5 that saves bpm changes and stops at the chart level, not the song level, by default.  So, the .ssc file had all of the changes, but not the .sm file.

EDIT: Rather than ask all of you to fix your charts, I'm manually fixing them myself. (there are only 7 songs with .ssc files)  In the mean time, I've removed the pack from the SPERGIN2 site.  The updated pack should be up by EOD.

Cheers!

EDIT THE SECOND: From looking at the .ssc/.sm files, it looks like My Love is the only broken song.  I've fixed it on the machine and still plan to have the updated pack by EOD.

Oh, that's just an embarrassingly newb mistake of mine. Oops, sorry!

So, you said it was fixed? I'll be going down to Acme this week and I'll test My Love specifically, but I'll try to play everything in the pack asap just to get a feel for how they're synced on the machine and stuff.

Not a problem.  I blame the developer who made chart-level bpm changes the default setting for a while. Tongue

It should be fixed on the machine now.  IIRC, every other .sm/.ssc combination I looked at used song-timing properly, but I wasn't being particularly rigorous.  If I did miss something, please let me know ASAP. Smiley

I didn't know OpenITG even read ssc files. I always export it from SM5 to OpenITG, then save it out from there as a final product. This avoids most conflicts/issues.

It doesn't.  The song folders submitted by some people had both the .ssc and .sm files in them.

The tournament is going to start at 12:30 PM!  I have no idea what time it will end; these things can be anywhere from 2 1/2 to 6 hours depending on whether everyone is on time, how cooperative they are, and how much they do not waste time disputing the rules.  Tongue

I still have to talk to Laura about party specifics, but there will be a Facebook event and stuff once it is all planned.

I will probably not enter this tournament if it's OK. I will still be there. I've been given an opportunity to train with one of the fastest running clubs in the country, and I really don't want to let it pass. I have a hill workout Saturday morning and it is probably not a good idea to continue exercising after. I hope this is OK.

You can do what I do; just play totally casually. I know that I'm not able to compete with most of the group these days, so I'm pretty much going into this tournament completely blind. I don't intend to press myself too hard. I just wanna flail and dance and have a good time.

I don't trust myself with that  Grin if someone picks a 12 on me you bet damn well I'm going to give it my all; I'm probably better off not playing. I have absolutely no concept of half-assing a competition.

Friendly reminder to all:

S.P.E.R.G.I.N.2. will NOT be held at ACME.

It will be held at Suko's house.  If you don't know how to get there, ask Suko.
