Heads up, I got a call today from a distributor offering ITG3. I know this cannot be anything official, but does anybody know anything about this? Maybe something good? Supposed to be a hard drive swap upgrade.

To be honest, I have not really heard much about this. There was a fan-made "ITG3" release a while back, but I don't think an arcade distributor would have found something like this and tried to sell it. There's always a possibility that it could just be a hacked ITG2 drive with many added songs and custom themes; however, if you wanted I could just do the same with the drive you have currently. I think it would be worth purchasing this if it's not too expensive.

Yeah, its most likely a hack, something like this...

Definitely a hack. I'd investigate further though, 'cause it is likely, as KDDR and Gosha suggested already, a heavily modded ITG R21 drive in an upgradocab, which is worth pretty decent money. I wouldn't put more than $4k towards it unless it's a hacked ITG2 Dedicab, in which case it's worth quite a bit more.

However though, if as you said it's just the drive upgrade, there's no need to pay for that; they shouldn't be selling it. I can just give you that for free. Since it's fan made and runs on the OpenGroove software (which is basically an open-source duplication of ITG made for use in arcade cabinets), you can legally upgrade for free.

Cool, it could be legal. Would it still have all the old ITG2 songs? We would hate to buy something that takes away, not add's to the game.
Thx for the info, guys.

Alright, I did a little more research. It seems that this drive is the culmination of the ITG3 project's work, and is fully supported by the community. It still retains all the ITG2 songs, and retains the custom song feature as well. In my opinion, I'd say that if you can do so for a reasonable price, certainly upgrade. Out of all the possible "ITG3" routes you could take, this is the most legitimate one. It adds a bunch of songs and also makes it "easier" to add custom themes to the machine if you ever want to do that in the future.

I played on a hacked ITG3 in Canada and I actually kind of liked having the additional songs on the machine, and I'm sure this is a higher quality kit than that one. I don't see any problem with it as long as there's no legal trouble for it.

I was under the impression from what I found that you could do the upgrade on your own for free...

Seems that we must buy a hard drive, and then address the security dongle somehow so that it will boot up. No price yet, but I bet it's 1000.00 or more. Thanks for the updates on this! Sounding better all the time.
