April 29, 2009, 02:26:41 PM - ORIGINAL POST -

Tony and I were discussing how much I miss the old Bemani get-togethers that used to happen back in the "old" scene, and I realized that there's no reason we can't have some of that now. Combine that with the fact that we now have a Pop'n Fever, and it kinda makes our place prime Bemani hangout real estate. So I was thinking - would anybody be interested in semi-regular casual gettogethers in our home, where we all just sat around and played Bemani, assorted other strange video games, and maybe some board games? I'm thinking less a giant blow-out bash and more like we all agree on a day of the week where, a couple of times a month during some several hour window, people just show up and play until we have to kick them out.

Any ideas? Games you'd like to play?

Is this open to anyone?

Also, where do you live. I'm sure that makes a huge difference to some of us.

This would be open to anyone who is verified to be cool. IE: If I've met you at ACME and you weren't being super loud/obnoxious/destructive, it's probably fine, and if someone I know well can vouch for you, it's probably fine. If some kid from Eastern Washington who I've never met wanted to come, that would be a different story...

We're in Bellevue. Smiley

I'd be up for this if it were a weekly thing; I wouldn't be able to make every meeting, of course, but would make best efforts.

Fri, Sat, or Sun gets my vote just because the workweek can be so unpredictable for me.

I probably wouldn't travel to Sea/Tac area unless there's an ITG2 or DDR Extreme tournament happening, at least until I have a sizable discretionary income.  Considering I'm unemployed and not really looking for a job at the moment, that probably won't happen any time soon. Tongue

Bump for more information!

We've been letting people come over on Sunday afternoons, and stay until they don't want to anymore. This Sunday is out because I'm traveling, but I think I'm just going to leave an open ended invite for every Sunday starting with next week's, the 24th. If I've ever met you before and you didn't seem particularly destructive, you are welcome to come and hang out and play games on Sunday afternoons - just let me know you're coming.  I like to sleep in, so let's say that 1 PM is the start time for this "event."

Tony and I have the Pop'n machine, IIDX 3-Happy Sky, DDR 5th, Extreme, Party Collection, and Max JP, and Konamix, Max and Max 2 US, In The Groove, with your choice of Afterburner or Cobalt Flux, as well as various other games that are not music-related but still fun. We have two TVs on which to play these games, and several computers on which to play Stepmania. We also have a Taiko controller, but Taiko 5, 6, 7, and Anime are waiting in queue at PlayAsia so at present all we have is Taiko US to play. If something you like isn't on this list, BRING IT!! Cheesy

Due to privacy concerns, I'm not posting my address in this thread. Please PM me if you'd like to come to these events and I'll give you more information. Smiley

I'm so done for this. I just need to get back to seattle in July, lol.

If there's any particular weekend after mid-june when a lot of people are planning on doing this, I think I can probably swing $20-$30 for a carpool up there now and then if any other Portland/Eugene folks are interested.  I've met enough Seattle folks who are "pretty chill" that I think it could be worth the time and effort. (and money)

Also, if you ever want to host a StepMania tournament, I'd be more than happy to organize it.  I can also bring my EMS USB2 adaptor and some good-sized speakers, and possibly some homebrew bars that the CF's/AB's would work with.  I'd just need to find a way to get that all from Portland to Seattle.  I'd really love to see the tournament scene get to the point where Standard tournaments and Team tournaments are viable options again at some point.

I'd be totally cool with having a Stepmania tournament here!! I know the whole "side tournament" thing doesn't always work, but a cool possibility to attract a lot of people to hang out could maybe be having a Stepmania tourney in the office and a Pop'n tournament on the machine; since there are no artificial time constraints I wouldn't be as worried about having to wait for people to play their matches. Particularly if this were done on a Saturday, for all I care, there could be some kind of all night tournament/Bemani party at our place, as long as we knew about it in advance and everyone was respectful of our few house rules (no shoes unless you're on or directly next to a DDR pad, don't spill anything and if you do, clean it up, don't be so loud you piss off our neighbors, etc etc.

I could probably pick up a few "nerd party" staples for something like this if it were to go down, although I really wonder how a homepad tournament where everyone has free Bawls and or Red Bull would go...

Sounds like Kumoricon. :O

Anyway, I think a stepmania tournament would be more of a side-event in and of itself, so I wouldn't worry about it at all as long as the tournament doesn't last longer than 10 hours or something ridiculous like that.  I'd totally be down if we want to set up a Saturday some time in July or August when we can all get together and run a bunch of little tournaments, whether they're just for fun or there's a prize attached.  I could probably pick up a few dozen VISO on my way up as well assuming I'm not too financially stretched when/if this occurs.

We could probably also go ahead and get some area rugs or carpet protectors to put down for get-togethers to have around the Stepmania so shoes aren't so much of an issue.  I'd personally be willing to clean my DDR shoes thoroughly before coming and just put them on to wear inside if you wouldn't mind.  It's not like they're the only pair of shoes I wear. Tongue

Cobalt Fluxes and Afterburners are both way better for tournament use than Arcade pads IMO, simply because tapeswitches tend to stick, whereas steel and copper do not.  I'd recommend CF's because they're designed primarily for functionality, especially if they're old CF's.  If you just put a bar behind them and some grippy rubber stuff under them, they are totally kosher for tournament play.

Except CF pads have annoying gaps between panels, and Afterburners have super-recessed arrows. :\

The only problem is that we have one CF and one Afterburner. We're looking into getting a second afterburner since they attach together very easily and are significantly less expensive than the CFs, but if we wanted to do a CF tourney, we'd need someone else to bring theirs.

Clean shoes and carpet protectors all sound fine. Basically the deal is that my carpet is only slightly off white and I don't own the place; we also lay on the floors a lot. So if it's clean enough that it doesn't mess up those two factors, I don't care. Tongue

I know you have late afternoons/evenings permabooked on Sundays, Jon, but how would you feel about coming over earlier in the afternoon sometime for one of these Bemanifests with pads? :O

As far as everyone else goes, great news. We just discovered an awesome place for an old 17'' LCD in our office on a shelf above a desk which, with some phonebooks under it, is the perfect height for taiko (the games came in) and IIDX; it's a pretty good replacement for the arcade experience! If anyone is up for this Sunday it should definitely be interesting to see how others feel about our little ghetto Bemani rig.

I only have a few more busy Sunday afternoon/evenings until school starts again. Memorial Day Sunday is open, but the next two aren't. Then, the rest are for summer...

Memorial Day Sunday is this weekend! I think we should try and turn this Sunday into a big Bemani blowout bash.

do you know wang?  He has two cfs in the seattle area we might be able to borrow.  We used his pads for the tournament at kumoricon last year.

bss, are your pads Bluesharks, Nexens, or Solomodes?

They're modded Solomodes from about 6-7 years ago.

And I don't know anyone named Wang.
