I'm not saying it's legit, but according to EvilDave and Bemanistyle:

Quote
An unofficial announcement of an official Konami lead tournament has been posted. Reasons for this unofficial announcement is due to the first regional tournaments starting very soon.

The Community Manager of Konami, Ryan Iyengar aka DukAmok is the main person behind this and has been in contact with EvilDave over some of the details of this upcoming event.

Here are some of the details:

    * The main event and regional's are to be held on SuperNOVA 1 for its availablity. SN2 will be used at locations when no SN1 is available.
    * "Satellite" regional tournaments will take place throughout the US at Gameworks locations.
    * The 1st place winners from each regional will be awarded with an all expenses paid trip to the finals.
    * Finals are to be held at the Gameworks Las Vegas, NV on the 5th of December.
    * The main event will only be open for the 1st place regional winners.

Competitors must register to compete on an upcoming Konami website. Entrance is free of charge.

I remember last year following posts on ddronlinecommunity.com on this subject. So I this just might actually be serious.

Should be fun if it turns out to be real.

I was at gameworks in Seattle a couple of days ago, and a kid I see there every now and again mentioned that gameworks was going to be holding some kind of tournament sometime in november........so this post has made my suspicion go WAY up.
Thanks for posting.
If it is real, this would be the FIRST konami sponsored national tournament right?

They've been talking about this on AiJ too, hopefully it happens.

Its too bad its just on Supernova cabinets, but I guess it makes sense.  Konami should give free upgrades to SN2 or X or something for the places running this.

All I know is that gameworks better fix their SuperNova, because that thing is starting to crap out pretty bad.

This would be cool if:
1. DDR SuperNOVA were capable of sustaining top-tier competition (I'm fairly certain MTJ and ZDR could AAA the game if they tried)
2. It were being hosted by reputable, reliable arcades with machines that were in good condition.

The only way I see a serious national tournament happening out of this is if they use a Marv-hack so that Marvs are on for normal play, and they offer some ridic funding to pay for the machines to be fixed to at least passable condition.  I am not aware of any Gameworks location that keeps their machines in tournament condition.

I appreciate the notion, but it should have happened 4 or 5 years ago when Extreme was tournament-grade material.  Then Konami might have actually made good DDR games, instead of waiting for RoXoR to make the best DDR game, and never live up to it.

According to the AIJ thread, Gameworks higher ups have been getting the word to get their machines in decent condition for the tournament; I'll be impressed if this actually happens though. :x I had a chance to play on the SuperNova machine during PAX and at least the 2P side was almost unplayable, didn't stick around long enough to see how well the 1P side was.

Yeah, if this wasn't sponsored by Gameworks, I'd almost think it would be better to have it at some place like Acme or Narrows.

Acme would perfect wouldn't it?
but.....imagine a tourny like this there if 40+ people showed up. That would be cramped as hell lol. Well I guess people could go venture off around acme......oh well, I'm just being stupid. I hope gameworks fixes their machine, because it really needs work if they want to pull this off.

The regional tournaments will be held on either SN1 or SN2, depending on which version your Gameworks has. The national tournament in Vegas will be held on SN1, due to the fact it has the largest distribution of any DDR version in the US. Currently the ONLY location that will be held on SN2 is in Dallas.
Did they just not see the 2000 or so Extreme cabs...?

Maybe they mean "largest not bootlegged distribution."

And for the few legit machines: Machines not licensed for this region Smiley No Extreme machines are supposed to be here. Why would they run a tourney for a game they never licensed to be here in the US?

Because the fans would like it. But that's a #$%@ stupid reason, ain't it?

Oh yeah! It's a great idea to reward a region that has the most illegally imported and pirated copies of your game! As far as Konami is concerned EX doesn't exist in America. If they were really asses they would have tried to recall it, but luckily for us the game was pirated at an unprecedented rate, making it impossible to track every machine. You have to realize that games are LICENSED FOR USE IN A SPECIFIC REGION for reasons that go beyond a company trying to screw its fans over.

I really think konami could care less at this point that there are DDR Extremes everywhere in the US. Besides, this tournament is supernove so lets just stop complaining about how dumb konami is, we all know already.
I just hope this tournament really pulls through. It just might give the community a good restart. Optimistic thinking FTW!

Read more carefully. I never complained about how Konami is dumb, and I never said that Konami did care, I just said that they are aware that there are many pirated EXs in the US. On top of that, if EX had a more limited distribution stateside, I'd imagine they'd have looked at it more carefully / visited locations, as the problem would have been isolated (ala what Konami lawyers are doing now). Konami could reacall all the illicit / NTSC-J region X's in america because there aren't many, and are aware of the locations. Could they do this with EX? No. This all and
.......silly konami Grin
Sounds like I'm not even the one at fault in this thread. You're doing more complaining than I am about Konami, I'm simply stating facts.

Or the problem could have been completely solved by just licensing EX cabinets in America.
Oh well, it never happened.
Now Konami is actually doing something for the community over here, so why don't we all get back on topic talk about what this thread is about.  A national DDR tournament.

There are many reasons for not localizing the game, one of the big ones would be they would have to re-license the music that they licensed exclusively for a Japanese release. There are many other reasons, and if you need them I will give them. You really don't realize how much effort it takes to localize a game. Realize DDR wasn't making money in Japan and hadn't in the US. Why would they make the first mix in 2 years in a region that never had commercial success with the game before (and yes, they brought it upon themselves by botching USA, but still).

Bo-Jesus.

Calm down Iori. I don't want a lecture on Konami's business practices and their international business model in relation to their bemani game franchise.

I don't really mind the tourney being on SN. But I do hope that Konami puts some serious pressure on the arcade owners to get the pads up to snuff. It'd also be nice if the owners would ask some of the regulars for advice on pad problems. Half the time the techs go out there, make sure the i/o check reports OK on all the pads, then they're done. There's no real way for a regular person to know that the pad is sticking on 1 out of 150 steps or something equally hard to identify.

I like how you think you know everything about Konami and their business practices. Yet, I don't see any sources or hard facts of this aside from your words. Got anything to back it up? Your know-it-all arrogance is getting on my nerves and I'd really like to see how you got so much smarter than the rest of us.

None of my points require INSIDER KNOWLEDGE. They are all incredibly basic and Konami's moves have been entirely congruent with what I've been saying. DDR's success / failure is very clear cut, and I don't understand what I exactly need to back up here. Cite instances where I need to back up something and I'll be more than happy to clarify.  Besides,

Why so curious all of a sudden? Are you mad at me for being correct about things? The only pattern I see is not me being arrogant, but you being flat out incorrect. Look over the past few topics we've had discussions in and tell me if I'm wrong.
