May 16, 2011, 01:25:23 PM - ORIGINAL POST -

It's probably about time to break this topic out from the main Acme thread, since there's been a lot of information about the machine posted to the main thread and the details are being obscured by meetup content at the same time that it makes it hard to notice the meetup / service update posts.

This thread will be here just to notify people of the work I do on the machine.  Song/pack requests should still go through the requests thread, physical maintenance still goes through the main thread.  In general, this thread is for reporting bugs to me (theme doing weird stuff, songs broken, etc) and for me to notify everyone of the changes I make.

ANNOUNCEMENT (5/31/11):

I'm beginning a daunting project - polishing the custom content so the machine remains suited to public use.  There are two main issues with much of the new content which will make the game awkward for new players and potentially existing players: Expert only and automatically generated display BPM.

Full sets of charts for every song in every pack is a lofty and very impractical goal given how long it will take to write that many charts, but a lot of the new content ranks in at very high difficulties, and it's going to be a problem if a lot of players don't want to play with one another because the single difficulty available for a chart isn't amenable to both players - making a 9+ Hard chart to match the 12+ Expert charts of non-long songs would be a good start toward balancing things out so that players won't feel a strong need to play one at a time.  I know this is a potential issue as there were whispers of "I don't want to play a set with X because I want to play significantly harder/easier charts than X" yesterday, and having alternate, but still expert level, charts will help mitigate this damage as well as mitigate how scary a fully-loaded machine will be to newer players.  Volunteers to help out with writing charts would be greatly appreciated - the new songs are all from widely available packs, so if anyone wants to write an alternate chart, go find the right pack, write it (and test it, please), then send the new .sm file to me.

Fixing display BPMs is a much simpler task.  Almost everyone has, at some point, gotten screwed by seeing a 140 BPM song listed as 140-280 because of some stuttered notes and picking the wrong speed mod as a result.  Any time you find such a chart, let me know what the real BPM or BPM range (I know of a song that is 50-100, but displays as 50-200 due to stuttering - I'm sure there are others) is and I will update the file with the corrected display BPM value(s).

Another idea I just thought of, but I'm not sure how practical it is: At regular intervals, for maybe a weekend or something a month maybe, put all the old content on the machine and let us browse through it to see if there's anything we want from it.

As far as the Mute and Zim packs go, I would be for compressing them, as I realized that I too don't like much (probably ~85%) of them.  However, there are definitely some gems in there.  sfxazure said earlier that he likes the Zim charts though, so even that may not be the best idea.

And as for me personally, I think the DDR Illini pack should be kept in its entirety, as I feel many of the songs/charts in it are very good.

3 months from now no one will be whining.

That won't happen. This community always finds something to whine about. Smiley

Tricky to coordinate (either I have to commit to two visits to Acme ahead of time or I do it arbitrarily and give everyone almost no notice that it's happening).  Players can easily find the full packs - I'm not compiling Mute and Zim into "Customs 3", I'm compiling them into "Mute" and "Zim".

Also, Suko nailed the issue - the packs as they are now are there because I rushed to get content onto the new hard drive as soon as it was confirmed to work (and have done minor cleanup afterward), rather than cleaning it up beforehand.  Keby had the packs, I wasn't particularly familiar with them, it got us content in a hurry.

Some portion of that content fails some arbitrary, subjective quality check and I'd like to remove it.  In an effort to minimize the arbitrariness and subjectivity, I'm leaving on files that have even a single explicit supporter (that is, somebody who says they want that file, not people who say "keep them all").  The packs are publicly available and players can easily ask me to add stuff pack in afterward.

If it turns out that the machine clearly sucks once the packs have been condensed, they can be added back easily, but I believe there are gains to be made by applying some quality control and will be trimming packs for the initial test run of the new computer.  Cooperation is liable to improve the outcome, bitching that I shouldn't do it won't accomplish anything until we have anecdotal evidence to the contrary (only possible after the trimmed packs are made).  I know that I may be abusing my role as the machine's admin by saying I'm going ahead with the trim regardless - I'm not happy about potentially  abusing my role, but I feel there are gains to be made that should be made.

As BlueSS noted, there will always be bitching about something: two few customs, too many to easily navigate, not good enough, too many hard packs, too many easy packs, etc.  Unfortunately, this means that I don't expect the amount of bitching to change significantly unless I do something clearly pointless (for example, removing all custom content has little purpose and would only serve to make people unhappy, and I can be fairly sure of that without trying it).

I'll probably go to Acme either tomorrow or Thursday to compile a list of charts I want to keep.  I wish I could access the XML file on my USB drive, but some songs have illegal characters and I can't.

I can think of about 10 charts among the packs that I want to keep off the top of my head, but I'd rather make a full list in one post; also, for some of them I forget which specific pack they're in (i.e. sometimes I don't know which specific pack [i.e. whether they're in Mute 4 or Mute 5]).

Is there any way to just see the metadata of the packs?  I use c*mc*st, that I have to share with 3.5 other people and don't want to hit their cap.

Aggregating useful metadata isn't too easily done, but I can least post the output of ls Songs/*/ when I get home.  Well, I can post that output after trimming out the packs that aren't being touched and the ones that I added just to see if they're worth having, since those are irrelevant to this thread (and, if left untrimmed, it would be a 2200 line post, since the output will be one per line).

I will note that the packs in question lack videos and as such come out to be pretty small - Mute 1-4 should be less than half a GB.  Additionally, Comcast gives you a monthly usage gauge if you log in to their site, so you can see how much wiggle room you have; then again, nobody actually knows their Comcast account credentials, so that's not that useful.

Additionally, a quick look at Comcast's FAQ says that the 250 GB cap is not a hard limit for you, only for them.  250 GB allows them to formalize the concept of "excessive use", but they claim to only target the top 1% of all subscribers per month.  They also claim that more than 1% consistently break that limit per month and the top 1% far exceed the 250GB limit; the limit is there more to keep them from contacting the top 1% is the policy actually worked well enough that only half a percent of users were breaking 250 GB.

Nothing keeps them from doing anything once you hit 250 GB, but it's doubtful they'll push it for going only a little over, so unless your family is already racking up nearly 250 GB/month, this won't tip the scales at all.  If the everyone in the household uses about equal amounts of bandwidth, you still get around 2 GB / day safely and I'm fairly sure that at least one person doesn't consistently hit that mark, so there's ever more bandwidth available.

I'm also fairly sure that Laura and I have broken the 250 GB limit multiple times (I'd check their usage meter, but I don't remember our login info at the moment) and we've never been contacted about it.

For one reason or another, I don't have Mute 5 on there - I'll download it when I get a chance and post the song list once I have it.

Oh yeah, DDR Illini with duplicates removed is 36 songs, which is a good size.  H1N1 without duplicates is just over 90 songs (there were a lot of duplicates against Tachyon Alpha and a few against other packs), which is still pretty sizable, but still a lot better than it was - I might still want to look into trimming it down a bit, but one larger pack is going to contribute less confusion that a large group of small similarly named packs (Mute, Zim), so I'm not all that worried about trimming H1N1 for quality at the moment - if there is a blatantly bad chart, let me know and I'll take a look at it, but I'm not doing anything elaborate.

After talking to vyhd, I've figured out why I'm missing the profile signature keys and will be getting them off the Acme machine next time I'm there.

The remaining work on the new computer is:
- Profile keys
- Edit the boot sequence to make ITG load by default.
- Trim Mute / Zim packs, add Gerrak's pack.
- Finishing the ITG3 / Chromatic hybrid theme (the skin will be almost unchanged, but we'll have a few minor ITG3 / OpenITG modifiers and some very important OpenITG features that are missing from the operator menu).
- Live testing at Acme.
- Code up something which can edit the machine stats so that scores for songs which are being moved around will be maintained (this includes merging the two high score lists for duplicates).  If I code something to do it, I don't have to do it by hand, which means I can do it at Acme and we do not lose any scores - if I do it by hand, the fixed copy will be a few days old and we'll lose a few days worth of scores.

If everything lines up perfectly and I'm not particularly busy this week, the new computer could be ready by this weekend, but I'm not counting on it.  That said, I'm looking to run a test session next weekend (27th-28th) instead.  I know PAX is that weekend, but I don't believe everyone here is going, plus I really only need 2-4 people to help me test, and having too many will make it hard to coordinate everything, since I made need to interrupt people or tell them specific things to play.  I won't turn away anyone who shows up to help, but if you have other things to do (like being at PAX), you don't need to go out of your way to show up that day.

The tentative plan is for me to get there before 11am (probably around 10am, but we'll see what happens) on Saturday (the 27th) to set up, and anyone who wants to help test things should show up at 11am (I need time for setup and to do the final work to get USB drives working through the hub).  Around 1pm, I'll decide whether the computer should be considered stable or not and swap the old computer back in if necessary.  If there are serious problems, I will try to fix them that day and run a second test session Sunday morning.

Once I'm sure the computer will be ready for the 27th, I'll start a separate thread on the events board.

I have Bill's permission to put the machine on freeplay during computer test sessions.

This is somewhat separate from the song request thread.  This is people voting for stuff that they don't want me to delete from existing packs, instead of proposing individual things to be added.  I felt it made more sense to get people to aggregate this information in the general maintenance thread, since it would create a lot of confusion in the requests thread.

Profile keys are on the new computer, Mute/Zim have been updated to reflect the songs posted so far (note to sfxazure: Zim 4 - In and Out Of Love does not seem to exist).

Remaining work:
- Keep trimming Mute/Zim as people post about them.
- ITG3 Chromatic (about 30% done)
- Boot sequence (about 50% done)
- Fixing scores (have not started, but it shouldn't be too much work)

Well, the test session is tomorrow morning.  If plan to come help out, make sure to remember your USB drive - I've only been able to do a bare minimum of USB testing without having the actual hub connected, and I'll only have a pair of drives with me, which is far from enough to do a thorough test run.

I've had a busy week, so progress has been slow.
- I've done about a quarter of the work need to fix scores, and I honestly won't be done in time.  I'll be copying the current machine stats.xml to the new computer tomorrow morning, and fixing the file up as soon as I'm done with the cleanup code.  High scores for any files that are in different packs that they used to be or that have been deleted because they are duplicates from another pack will disappear for a few days, but will come back once I finish the cleanup program.  The program will merge scores as appropriate, so so new scores will be be merged with the old - no scores from the new or old computers will disappear... well, if I need to run multiple test sessions, only scores from the last test session be kept, but that's the only possible loss.

Theme work has been at a relative standstill as well, so I'll leave the current Chromatic version in place and wrap up the fixed version soon.  Setting up the correct boot sequence is the only critical (i.e. keeping me from installing the new computer) work remaining, and I'll be wrapping that up tonight.

In a couple minutes, I'll be loading everything into my car and heading to Acme to start the install.  Everything looks good so far, so hopefully there will be no new issues once the new computer is wired into the machine.
