Acme Bowl ITG Custom Song Request Thread
We can add songs to the Acme Bowl ITG cabinet now.
I'm in charge of this, so basically this is how it works:
1. Post in the thread a link to the song that you want added to the machine. Make sure the audio is in the correct format, the SM file works with R21 syncing, and that you have a banner/background file if you don't want a generic one.
2. I'll play the song on my custom ITG build, and tell you if it's appropriate to add to the Acme machine.
3. Barring any weird stuff going on in my life, I'll add the song to the Acme ITG cabinet next time I do an update. This should occur fairly frequently.
4. If you have a song that you want added but don't have the file yourself (or it's a really common file), just post the song name and author and I'll look for it. I have all the DDR song packs converted for hacking, so that should be possible to add immediately.
Current Added Songs/Packs

ITG Rebirth
Customs 1:
Loituma (12) (syncing is correct)
Lucky (9) (syncing untested, let me know)
Seven (11) (syncing untested, let me know)

The Final Hour (12) (syncing untested, let me know)
Boten Anna (11) (syncing untested, let me know)

Hey I forgot we had this thread.
Can we maybe get Fly High from Flash Exclusives 2 put back on the machine? It was taken off at some point. Just throw it in my pack, that whole pack isnt worth putting on, all the good charts except that one are already on the machine. Thank you! Else if you can't find it I'll email it to you or something.

Re: Acme Bowl ITG Custom Song Request Thread
Just got back from a long session, a bit aggravating because are several songs that are more or less a guaranteed fail if you're not expecting the gimmick. e.g. I selected Whiteblue as my first song of a set, and it turns out to be a tiny viewport gimmick which just killed and annoyed me.
If I was to prioritize anything as a first step, I'd suggest removing/refoldering the surprise death gimmicks. Completely wrong bpm and weird view things would probably be the easiest to find. The other, quicker, option is just to get some voting, ax some packs, and try out some new ones.
E: On another note, I was checking a few random packs from
http://r21freak.com/phpbb3/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=12155,
and Rynker's Hard Techno, Gensokyo Voyage, Gensokyo Holiday, and Stomp Exceed (out of what I somewhat randomly selected) all seem like great packs: Multiple difficulties, not gimmicky, accurate ratings, etc. At least far better than having so many songs with a single 14+ chart.

For example: Along with the estimated difficulty, add a tiny
St
to mean long streams,
Sp
for high speed streams,
Rh
for complicated rhythm,
Gi
for gimmicks, or whatever (maybe icons instead of letters). That would (hopefully) make it pretty apparent that the difficulty is part of a separate sort of calculation, while making it really easy to try new songs without being disappointed. It would probably also require a legend or something to be taped to the machine, but that shouldn't be too bad.

I like it. Simple yet effective. Though I don't know if this is going to do anything to help out complete noobs.
It won't help beginners, but pretty much everybody I've seen tends to play in the 9 to 11 range.

Simple idea that I don't think people will understand. If you're going to do that, people need to be able to look at it and know what it means without being told what it means.
That and it will just be contradicting what was already there (i.e. is it a 14 or a 11 now?)
Good suggestion though, I like where we're going with this.
One possible idea to make it less confusing is to make it more complicated and useful.
What if we made up some sort of groove radar/legend setup? For example: Along with the estimated difficulty, add a tiny
St
to mean long streams,
Sp
for high speed streams,
Rh
for complicated rhythm,
Gi
for gimmicks, or whatever (maybe icons instead of letters). That would (hopefully) make it pretty apparent that the difficulty is part of a separate sort of calculation, while making it really easy to try new songs without being disappointed. It would probably also require a legend or something to be taped to the machine, but that shouldn't be too bad.
I might be overthinking a solution for a problem people don't really care about, but I would personally love to be able to categorize charts without playing them.

Actually, now that you mention banners, on songs with incorrect difficulties, why not just modify the banner by adding a little note in the corner (e.g. put a
~12
and
~15
or whatever on the Quasar banner). That way you could do the same thing for all the misrated songs without needing to worry about whether they're a 'classic' or anything like that.

If you're going to re rate charts. Do it to newer ones. Leave old stuff like AIR, Boten Anna and stuff alone. They've had the same difficulty for such a long time that most dance game players know the chart by difficulty and not necessarily the banner art or something else.

I'll throw in my two cents.
There are some charts that obviously are rated terrible and then those that were rated before they knew what say a 12 or 13 looked like.

That and have a bias of both DDR and ITG when rating. 1-9 do it by DDR standards and then 9-whenever are legs explode, by ITG. I find it best for people to understand. Just sayin.

I completely agree. Whoever thought that AIR is just a 12 is out of their mind.
A lot of the classic stepmania charts (like AIR & Quasar if I'm not mistaken) came out before ITG, when the top of the scale was 10 (Which covered a pretty wide range of difficulties, from Sakura to PSMO). Going above that was a pretty big deal, and you could only really get to 13 with the stock stepmania skin (it had feet going up to 10, and there was room for about 3 extra feet). So some sort of stepchart difficulty standard emerged. Anyways, that's why Air is a 12, Quasar Hard and Expert are 10 and 13, and so on. (correct me if I'm wrong here)
Anyways, the misrating is generally not an issue of the charter having no idea how difficult a song actually is, it's simply rating them on a completely different scale. Finding the songs to check out should be as simple as looking at who charted it.

Somewhat on the topic of rating steps: Didn't one version of StepMania actually offer a suggestion as to what a song's rating should be? Obviously this isn't as accurate as a human player making the call, but I thought it was an interesting feature. I can't seem to remember which version that was on...anyone remember?

Couple thoughts:A few of the difficulties really aren't correct at all, this makes it a bit harder (at least for me) to try new songs with high notecounts.
This is a far, far more difficult problem than it sounds. If people are really passionate on rerates for the machine, I would volunteer my input and judgement on what they should be because I try to be fairly impartial to my personal strengths and weaknesses and actually mathematically compare to already existing charts (preferably official but that's impossible to do with the super high end), but even still, rerates can be tricky and just open up another can of worms for disagreements.
Still, I'm TOTALLY down for rerating charts that are rated 1 when they should be an 8 - 13. Rating something and having most people disagree but actually trying to rate it accurately is TOTALLY different from just being lazy and not assigning it a rating. Assigning charts at 1 is sheer laziness to me and just creates a complete grab bag situation for difficulty.

Re: Acme Bowl ITG Custom Song Request Thread
Couple thoughts:
A surprising number of songs are unplayable due to artificially increased volume. If you're looking to remove songs, these are easy targets (unless somebody wants to go and adjust them).
It might be good to reduce the overall number of version folders. (e.g. Tachyon/Touhou/MLP/whatever in a single folder)
A few of the difficulties really aren't correct at all, this makes it a bit harder (at least for me) to try new songs with high notecounts.

Re: Acme Bowl ITG Custom Song Request Thread
Hey Tony (apparently you're in charge of said machine now), Beta 2.0 came out for Rebirth 2 with the final steps for the charts. I know it has a few sync issues and some people are laying some massive hate on Rebirth 2, but I would REALLY appreciate it if you put it on the machine. Very few packs or even similes for that matter have complete steps, as in all difficulties for both single and double, and honestly, that's the stuff I really appreciate so I know that at least I would be heavily playing it. Besides, it's new!
Cool, peace.

Advice: Use ITG's popularity indicator. If a custom is below a certain popularity after being on the machine for 3+ months, pull it.
I know it's not a perfect means of purging, but it's simple.

Re: Acme Bowl ITG Custom Song Request Thread
I like having some customs on the machine, but I think the machine is approaching the point at which it becomes too cluttered, and you have to sort through a lot of charts to find one that's good. The issue with my opinion is that the charts I feel are good are very different from the charts that some other players think are good, so it's not really easy to just filter out "bad" charts.

DISTINCTLY LACKING IN PEANUT CONTENT
Re: Acme Bowl ITG Custom Song Request Thread
I'll admit to not having played through the new packs
that
extensively, but so far I'm not hugely impressed. An ongoing project will be to trim the bad charts from these packs (since I'm really not a fan of the style of these packs in the first place, I'll generally take action based on what other players complain about).
There are some very interesting charts and some very interesting songs (and some very interesting charts to some very interesting songs), but the bulk of the new content doesn't seem all that varied. There's just way too much generic trance, most of it with generic stream charts - not a crossover or change in rhythm in sight.
Additionally, not being a fan of abusing BPM changes (slowdowns legitimately happen, but many charts force a slowdown when there really isn't one, just because the song got a little quieter, and - more importantly - very few charts give any indication a slowdown is coming, so good luck comboing your sightread when the screen full of LUDR 16th notes suddenly starts scrolling at half speed) and the various BPM gimmicks that show up, I do have to say that there are a good handful of charts I just really don't want to play.
In terms of difficulty, it seems to be a good fit for the majority of Acme players for now. My stamina is very slow to build, so the average chart from these packs is not something I'm all that likely to play, but that's what comes with Expert only packs and I'll be addressing that by adding extra charts as I have time. Of the 9's I've played, a few were really well done and the others screamed "well, this pack needed a couple easier charts so let's mash something out in 5 minutes and hope nobody actually plays it".

If Bill's machine is like mine, I highly suggest upping the RAM in that thing while you can. Getting that much content on the machine might be problematic if it's only running on the 512MB of RAM.

Hey guys, good news and bad news.
Good News:
We figured out how to put songs on not using manage packs (thank freaking god and awesome job Tony!!)
Bad news:
Turns out we only had 1.3 gigs of space left on the drive itself (they're small D:). So we couldn't even get 1/10th of the stuff I was going to put on let alone the Illini pack or H1N1.
Even Better News: Tony is going to solve this by either this weekend or in the near future with getting a 100 gb HDD. This will last the machine forever. The End.
I will update when more happens. I just wanted everyone to know this, so nobody gets all pissed. It's disappointing I know.

Just make sure you super-compress the video and reduce it's size. These machines need the video as small as possible to prevent lag issues. I use 320 x 240 res and 512 bitrate on mine. It looks fine on the ITG cabinet's CRT monitor and reduces the file to < 5mb.
