Just thought I might just make a thread since I'll be gone for all of July.
I'll be teaching english at some high school in Xinxian. It should be pretty cool. After this, in ~2 years or so, I think I might try to get into JET, but I dunno about that.

That should be fun.  One of my friends tried getting a stint teaching English but when he got to China apparently the school didn't need him anymore and so he ended up without a job and eventually at great personal expense was able to make his way back to the US (he of course took a brief vacation in China first).  So, here's to you not having to do that.

When it comes to teaching in Japan, JET is an option.  There are also many private companies to look into that you may enjoy working for.

In any case, here's hoping it will be fun and you won't have the same experience my friend had!

If you get a chance, make sure to haggle a shopkeeper or two below any reasonable price for something they're selling.  Walking up, pointing, and saying "one dollar" will work if you're in the right area.  Non-exploitative fun is fine too.

Oh yeah, that's quite possible. although they will make it seem as though the horrible lowest price for them is still quite profitable sometimes. In addition, I know a bit of chinese, so that could be quite an advantage hagglewise.

Also, I'm only going there for a month, so there's really no chance I'd be stranded. (I already have airfare both ways)

Have fun. Cheesy

As for JET, I'm thinking about joining, but don't really like the idea of having to supplant a lot of my own money (They give you a salary that hasn't been adjusted for inflation in 20 years.)

Overall, Tada, I think the whole teaching English system in Japan is seriously outdated.
It was fun and a great experience, but it just isn't like it "used to be" in that yes the salary has not really accounted for inflation, and in general there is decreasing demand, I feel, for the service.  In the late 70s-just before the recession, it must have been an absolute blast though.
Not to say it wasn't a blast regardless but...heck I would recommend anyone do it for at least a year.

I can't locate a cord to connect my camera to my computer. I would think it would be a simple thing, just a usb device cord, but I am unable to find one. I haven't been looking in the right places perhaps....
Anyways, all I have as far as pictures right now is one from a web cafe, with the child of one of the teachers at the school I am at.

Here's a bad picture of some three wheeled cars that everybody drives. English teaching is going pretty well.

Have a couple more photos.

So now that you've been over there for a while, what are some of the best/worst parts of living over there?
