And I'll throw in, if we want a custom song tournament, I can help organize a lot of high quality files that the community hasn't seen until the pack to practice is released.
PS: I always run air hockey tournaments at these things too, so expect one too.

1x is so brutal...I go from SDGing 7s, to getting in the 20s on 8s and then probably barely/not even AAing 9s. It goes downhill rather quickly for me. I wouldn't say I'm terrible, but I'm definitely not...well let's just say I've played with Pickles a few times. (I remember he flagged Cartoon Heroes 1x against me in a tournament)

I'd give you a good run for your money on anything 1x... that's all I play.
Bring it on son.
That's all I've been playing to get ready for this tourny in Colorado.

Re: Tourney ideas!
Might as well throw my obscure format in:
King of the hill
First you have a qualifier to determine who starts as King of the Hill, that player gets a point for becoming King. After this, they face opponents in some sort of order (Could be randomly determined, as long as everyone gets the same amount of turns...having people go from best to worse or the opposite could lead to racking up too many points easily, or losing right away) Every win they get gives them another point, anyone who dethrones the King gets two points and becomes the new King.
The catch - The longer someone stays King, the more handicaps they get. It might start with something vaguely distracting like beat, and go up to boomering, then something trickier like alternate, or speed mods forced outside of the player's comfortable range. (The key of course, is to make it progressively harder, but still possible for the player to win...or at least possible until say, they've had 4 or 5 wins in a row, at which point things will really be getting stacked against them.)
This format hasn't been fully fleshed out yet, but I've seen it used once before. (I first came up with it well before the ITG days but never myself ran a tournament in said format.)

This was good idea Jon.
And I'm totally backing the idea for a default 1x no bar tourney. I find it would be a true test of skill. Especially on Bag

I tried to split some of the other thread into it's own tournament ideas thread. If there are some other posts I should merge or missed, let me know.

This thread is not the the Canada conference... please post in a different thread
alright alright.
anyways just a suggestion. I'm going to a tourny out here in colorado on June 20th with an interesting rule set that I thought I'd share. It seems obvious, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't happen much. Basically it's a DDRmax/DDRmax2 tourny only no mods allowed. No bar either. Just thought I'd share because 1x/no bar would make it very interesting, especially for all those 5x mini BAR ONLY players.

DMN, would you mind corunning a tournament with me and preferably one other reliable, experienced person, pref. Suko?
If anyone's tournament happens at a time I can make it, I don't mind helping out in any way that I can. Regardless, make sure you grab this rad piece of software. I've used it for many of my tournies and it makes tracking people along the brackets a lot easier (it also helps take the burden off of the organizers a bit):

I'm saying this NOT to be a dick, but you REALLY don't want to run a tournament you're entering.
Meh. I agree that if you want to be 100% legit and honest at a tournament that this is the best practice to follow, but I'm not that worried about foul play or self-intrest conflicts at this thing. If this was the ITG Nationals, then I'd say you're correct, but I believe this tourny is going to be more for fun rather than permanent bragging rights from now until the sun explodes. I'd say let the organizers play. However, if a lot of people start harping up about this and don't want the organizers to participate, I'd be willing to sit out and run the tournament without competing...though my soul might die a little.

Tricksy
Tourney ideas!
That's definitely understandable. Our scene kind of just died as people got older, went to college, stopped playing, etc...
We've done some challenge tournaments such as Great Attack, playing a set with your hands raised in the air, only using one foot on songs like Waka Laka standard (forcing you to use a hand and go down)... stuff like that. Those were a lot of fun.
Maybe we could do a tournament where you can only play songs from two difficulties? Like, only 7's and 11's. The 7/11 tournament!
It's just that setting caps on a run-of-the-mill tournament sounds even worse than just run-of-the-mill, to me a least. If we're going to get crazy, let's get crazy.

Kevin Birrell's Excellent Fabulous Tournament Ruleset
This ruleset when properly implemented aims to result in the best overall player winning the tournament. In this case, let "best overall player" be defined as the highest ranked player on the only even semi-official In The Groove ranking site, Groovestats. That is to say that the best player is the player who has the highest average score over the entire set of Expert charts available by default on ITG2. In order to do this, we need to ensure that both 9s and 13s are played along with everything inbetween.
Matches should be
best of 5
.
Song selection works like this:
Higher seed picks either pad choice or First/Third song selection vs. Second/Fourth song selection.
Fifth song is a random Expert chart (or Hard if both players agree).
Throughout the tournament, each player is given 5 "limit" cards, with a different number on each. These "limit" cards will have numbers on them such as 17, 18, 19, 20, and 22.
In any given match, you may pick a pair of songs up to the difficulty of your chosen limit. If you had a 20 limit card, you could pick a 10 and a 10 or a 13 and a 7. The point is to balance out difficult song selections with easier ones to ensure the full spectrum of difficulty is played and that the best overall player wins the match.
There's two ways of going about this: you can either force the player to hit their "limit" or just enforce to play a set
up to
their limit. Either method works, although really the former will encourage a more even balance while the latter skews the results towards players who have better timing on easier charts.
Bracket runs as usual. It can be either single or double elimination depending on how much time you have and how many players you have.
Pad arbitration recalcs way offs to excellents and misses to greats. Way offs are unavoidable; misses on the Acme pads simply just means you're not playing correctly.
Credit to BlueSS for the addition of a non-linear method of setting the "limit"s.
Anyone want to tell me why this sucks?

I thought of a totally gimmicky, fun side tournament idea that would apply to the "just messing around" players who fail out of ITG hard.
It would be a round robin DDR Max 2 straight PA tourney... on
light mode
. It would essentially be 5 dollar bets on who could get the highest score on a 3 star, 40 step chart to Cowgirl. It is surprisingly hard to consistently AAA anything, even a chart with 60 steps, so I think that this would lend itself to some very "cutthroat" competition.

I would
so
look cuter than her if I could find a pair of UGGs that would fit me.
