Okay guys, so I talked to the owner about running a In The Groove 2 Tournament and hes willing to throw one, but I need your guys help in organizing it since some of you have already ran some in the past. It'd be nice if someone is willing to help me run the tournament.

Also, if any of the more experienced players from Seattle or Portland area come down, I'd like an alternative plan if there were to have a significant amount of non-hardcore players.

If we could have some techs during the tourny to assist with any pad malfunctions, that would be great.

Okay, aside from all the stuff that's above, I've come up with some pretty simple rules.

Double Elimination Tournament Rules

-A qualifying song will determine where you seed. You will not know the qualifying song until the tournament starts.

-Higher seed gets to choose either song first or what side they want(1st player side or 2nd player side).

-There will be no swearing since you will mostly be around kids, so please refrain from any foul language if you do happen to swear.

-No being a douche hat (yeah I changed it from ass-hat to douche hat), that means no picking a super hard song like Energizer on a player that can barely pass a 10(in other words, do not pick a song that the other player is incapable of passing). The other player must have mutual interest in whatever song was picked ONLY if the difficulty exceeds 11.

-1 veto per match will be issued per match

-If there happens to be a legitimate pad error, we will recalculate the score.
Non-legitimate errors being called will be judged by the many people that are watching and be dealt with in a mannerly way; poor sportsmanship will not be tolerated.

-No flash photography while players are playing.

-Best out of 3 games wins the match.

-If players happen to run into a tie, we will let random decide which song is picked next and the winner of that song will advance.

-Players will be given a break if needed.

-Please let the judges know where you are going if you happen to be the next one to play and have to go outside for whatever reason it maybe. This way we will know where you are at and will not throw you out of the tournament because we don't where you are.

-Be on time for the event, but there are some exceptions if you are running late by like 10 or 20 minutes. You can call the place at (360)455-0183 and let us know so we can get you into qualifying.

-Final 4 players will play Long version custom songs selected by me. How this will work is, I will choose 3 custom songs that will be played in order of 9 foot, 10 foot, and 12 foot. You are welcome to request songs. Post your requests here in this thread.

-Most importantly, have fun as always.

I need some feed back from you guys now so I can finalize this and run it over to the owner so we can work on a specific date the tournament will be on. Thank you.

Please let me know if I'm missing anything. I really want to make this a big tournament, and I'd really love to see everyone on here from the pnwbemani community to come down and participate.  Smiley

If you get a few spare sensors I can help fix up the pads and run the tournament as well. Of course, I'd need to be in the area. I'll be leaving for something in Bellingham on July 25, then I'm gonna be in England from August 8th to 25th. However, if you're gonna run it before or after then it sounds great! I was thinking of running a tournament at Acme in September, but this sounds good as well.

I'd like an alternative plan if there were to have a significant amount of non-hardcore players.

I would love a tournament that offered more than one division to enter. I consider myself good at this game, but in a completely different way from the regular "pros". I can't really use the bar, and as such haven't even considered competing in an ITG tournament because I simply can't compete at that level. If you can organize a no-bar or a lower division tournament (like 9 step songs or less) than I would likely come down for this, assuming it's not on a work day. Or better yet, a doubles tournament would be awesome (but unfortunately time consuming). If we had more players like Laura and Crystal, I would suggest a standards tournament with a very inexpensive prize to the winner, like a $5 Starbucks card or something. Perhaps making the main prize in the upper division significantly more than the lower division will entice the good players to compete there, instead of the lower brackets.

Anyways, I'm just throwing that out there as my 2-cents.

Multiple Brackets is a great idea.

Example:

Expert bracket. Every song is available, even those with no expert difficulty (I assume this would be an officials tourny only with the exception of the finals)

Hard bracket. Songs ranging from 6's to 9's

and so forth.

Two brackets seems like a good way to go if you have time for it.  That's what we did at the DDR Magic tournaments, and it seemed to work well.  Hard to prevent someone who's really good from deciding to enter the lower division just to destroy everyone, though.  You may want a rule that people can only enter one of the two divisions, so if some 12 difficulty player decides to annihilate the lower division, that prevents him from entering the upper division at all.

Also, double elimination tournaments take a LOT of time if you have a decent turnout, especially if you're doing "best of three songs".  Watch out for that.  It'll take much longer than you expect it will.  It took longer than WE expected it would, and we had two machines available.  Smiley

I talked to the owner again yesterday, there's no official date yet, but he said it would be somewhere in September (He will be advertising and promoting until then). It will most likely be on a Saturday, since that's when we'll have the most time. Place opens at 12pm and closes at 11pm.

I'm aware of how long it would take for a double elimination tournament if 20-30 people showed up haha. We just want people to have a better chance and have more fun. If the tourny doesn't finish in the first day, we could always continue it the next day or next week. Whatever is more convenient for people to come back and finish it.

Kevin(DDR) That would be awesome, but I'm not sure if the techs or owner know how to get a hold of some sensors, since they didn't even know how to clean out the pads until we showed them. But I'll ask and see if they can get some. If you could tell me how much a standard price for them are or where I could find them most inexpensive, that would be great. You should definitely run a tournament at Acme after this one!

Suko, that's not too bad of an idea. There is a DDR Extreme Cabinet right next to the ITG2 and it'd be kinda cool if I could put that to good use somehow. I think extreme would be more fitting for lower division players, since it does have a more wide selection in music and the songs are not all that hard. It would be perfect for no-bar. The only problem is I need someone supervising that side of the tournament if both tournaments were to be going on at the same time, but I'm sure we can work it out. I just need to let the owner know who's going to be doing what.

Is that DDR Extreme cabinet the one with all the edits on it? Just wondering. Also, I'll point you to a place that sells sensors in a little.

Yeah, it has edits on them. I played a couple of the edits; the drop out edit was not fun at all though, I can tell you that much lol

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh shit I gotta get down there then. Fun times were had on that machine. In fact that was the DDR machine that I learned how to play on more or less. That was almost ten years ago! Good memories.

Multiple brackets don't sound too bad of an idea either. I should set it up just in case we do have a good amount of non-expert players. That way, everyone will have a chance of winning or at least have more fun.

I'd enter an Extreme tournament, I'd enter an ITG Standard tournament, and at this point, if I had to, I'd probably enter an ITG Expert tournament and just pick songs strategically. Tongue This sounds like fun!

Edit: As a tournament organizer, I appreciate your commitment to no douches or flash photography! Cheesy

And another edit: HOLY CRAP, this is one of the machines with all of Foy's old edits? NEED TO PLAY THEM.

Um so we're already kinda in the works at getting a tennis style ITG tournament at Acme going (Round robin maybe as well?). If you were just looking to have a random ITG tourney that's cool and I'll be there but I was already looking into a very expert level 8man tournament, designed to give a more solid ranking and more epic matches than Single or Double Elim do, plus on Acme pads. Just something to think about Smiley Again, I'll be there though if/when yours does go down

If I was going to run a tournament at Acme it'd probably be in October. I think it'd be good to space that out a little from this event.

Alright, so I got permission from the owner to put the extreme machine into play. And I'm going to make this a no-bar Extreme tournament, since it will challenge the players accuracy and balance without the support of the bar. I should probably make a separate thread for the rules and details. If you guys have any suggestions for what kind of a tournament(i.e single elim./double or tennis style) it should be, that would be great. Anything that will interest you to come down and play Smiley

The extreme pads do need some work as they are very old. Its okay right now, but its not as good as it should be.

Yes Laura, the foy edits exist on that machine :O not sure how many edits are on there though, but I'll check them again the next time I go.

if I could ask for a clarification,

Both players must agree to selecting the chosen song.

Specifically in regards to "both players must agree to selecting the chosen song," couldn't both players theoretically not agree on a song for a long duration of the tournament? Maybe each player could have one veto per match?

I would absolutely love to see some kind of team-based tourny setup for this. I think it would be a lot of fun, but it could also be incredibly problematic, because very few tournaments have done competitions like this.

Does anyone have any proposals for how something like this could work? I don't have any specifics nailed down just yet, but perhaps something with two or three people on a team would be ideal. Also, don't flame me for this suggestion, but maybe running the tournament like they did in the 10k Commotion might be fun.

Quote
First player picks the song, Second Player picks the mods. Players will switch for selecting the second song and the third song is picked by ROULETTE on SHUFFLE.

...

Playable Modifiers on the DDR 10K Commotion Mix are:
Speed 1x, 1.5x, 2x, 3x ,5x, 8x
Boost, Brake, Expand
Hidden, Sudden, Blink, Dark (Stealth is NOT a selectable modifier at the 10K Commotion)
Mirror, Left, Right, Shuffle, Special Shuffle
Reverse, Flat, Vivid, Solo

http://10kcommotion.com/details.html

This would allow players who know they will be out PA'd by their opponent to apply mods that might turn the tables. I'm not trying to say that this setup would be "fair and unbiased" or will show once and for all who're the greatest players ever, but it sure would be fun and something different from the standard setup.

Going off of scott's idea for team based stuff.

Why not a Couple's chart tournament?
There a some really good ITG couples charts out there that would make some fun competition.

It could definitely be a smaller tournament. Maybe just have the top 4 scores move on after the first round? then top two scores to decide the winning team.

Seeing as we down here have tournaments maybe once every two years, and the only tournament I made it out to in Japan was gimmicky bullshit, can we just have a normal one this time around?

Team tournament sounds pretty cool though; I've had ideas for that for a while and I'll post them when I get home later.
