S.M.H. (Stepcharts Made Horribly) ITG Tournament
Brought to you by Ben (sfxazure) with help and hosting from Scott (Suko)
July 25, 2015, Starts at 11am sharp.
Entry Fee: $5.00 if you preregister, $10.00 at the door.

SMH (formerly SPERGIN) is a tournament held in the PNW every summer with a ruleset inspired by Zetorux’s DOWNS customs tournaments. Preregistrants can submit up to four songs that, once approved, comprise the tournament pack. The pack is frozen after a cutoff date, and the tournament is a (mostly) standard double-elim bracket played with the competitor-submitted pack.

EDIT: Charts can be found HERE as they're uploaded.

EDIT: The pack is available for download HERE.

What’s new this time around:
- Submissions must now use OGG audio so they can be played on stock setup ITG. MP3 audio, though it works on OpenITG, will be rejected.
- The start time is being moved to 11 AM.

Otherwise, the tournament’s ruleset is identical to SPERGIN4’s.

The Rules

Phase One: Preregistration and Stepchart Submission
Ends June 14, 2015

Preregistration will begin immediately and will run until the end of Phase One. Attendees who preregister will pay a discounted rate ($5.00 instead of $10.00). Reach out to me either by PM, in person, by carrier pigeon, etc. I’ll be accepting payment through PayPal (username bkirz), Square Cash (send to $bkz) or in person.

You will have from today until the submission cutoff to submit up to four songs (one stepchart each) to be included in the tournament pack. Make sure to identify yourself by name/forum name somewhere in the file. I’d prefer for you to create and submit new stepcharts, but any are fine as long as you had a hand in their creation. Submitted songs/stepcharts will be rejected if they do not conform to the following rules:

- The chart must be to a song which does not exceed three minutes and thirty seconds (3:30) in length. This keeps the tournament moving and makes it so people don’t to have to pay more to practice “long song” charts.
- Songs must be appropriate for play in public venues such as ACME Bowl. Please avoid profanity or find some way to work around it (clean versions, comedic censoring, etc.) Any content deemed inappropriate for a public venue will be rejected.
- Songs must be ITG Arcade Ready. If your song is over 2 minutes, DO NOT .OGG PATCH IT. OGG only; songs submitted with MP3 audio will be rejected.
- Stepcharts must have at least 50 hittable arrows. While there may be ways to make an interesting chart with under 50 steps, it would increase the likelihood of ties and slow the tournament down.
- The stepchart must be Expert difficulty. This is to ensure that we can use the ITG machine’s built-in Random selector to pick tie-breakers. Submitted songs can have any number of stepcharts, but only the Expert chart can be picked during the tournament.
- Charts that have been submitted to any of the S.P.E.R.G.I.N. 1-4 tournaments can not be submitted. Make some original content! If you’re not sure what counts as “the same chart”, ask me.
- Don’t be a dick. Don’t crash the machine. If you do some fancy LUA scripting, clean up after yourself.

If a song is rejected for any reason, you may submit a replacement; cleaned-up versions of rejected submissions can be submitted, as well as completely different songs/charts.  After a song has been accepted for the pack, it is finalized and can not be replaced or modified.

As soon as a stepchart is accepted into the pack, it will be made available for download.

I can’t stop you from preregistering, submitting charts, and then not showing up. But doing that is super lame. Come on, don’t be lame.

Phase Two: Practice
At this point, the pack is finalized and preregistration is CLOSED. After aggregating the submission results, the pack will be released and installed on the ACME machine.

Phase Three: TOURNAMENT!
July 25, 2015
This will be a double elimination event. Only songs from the SMH pack will be playable in this tournament.

Seeding:  Seeding is based on registration order to encourage early registration.

Matches:  High seed gets first choice of machine side or pick order. The other choice goes to low seed. Each player will then pick one song of their choice to play against the other player.   Whoever gets the highest percentage (as calculated by the machine) on a given song wins that song. (You know how this works by now.) If both players are tied at the end of two songs, a third song will be chosen from the SMH pack by way of the ITG machine’s “random” function. If both players are still tied, another random tiebreaker will be chosen until the tie is broken.

Song Selection:  Each player may only use a song as their “pick” once over the course of the tournament. Because this is not intended to be a serious tournament, either player may fail any song throughout all tournament rounds with no additional penalty - once you fail, your percentage is “locked” as your score.

Prizes:  Once preregistration ends and we have a better idea of how many entrants we will have, we will determine a prize structure based on 100% of the entry fees.

Entry #1. The first half is synced perfectly as it is. The second half is supposed to be synced well, so if it's off then nudging it into sync would be helpful.

I was following your chart until exactly 1 min into the video, where I think the chart makes you turn your back to the screen (if you do not switch foot).

I've played this back 4 times now, and each time I see the pattern, I end up turning my back to the screen and it doesn't seem intentional. It's a pretty solid chart all around. Perhaps I just don't get it or am reading it wrong.

Note: I'm mostly a no-bar player, so when I read a chart, I read it as if I'm supposed to play it without switchfooting (unless it's intended, like Rock Robotics).

You'll turn to the side and crossover during that first run and then face forward again.

As for the footswitching part shortly after, it shouldn't be a bar-exclusive kind of thing. You should still be able to footswitch no-bar.

IMO, footswitching isn't something usually intended in a chart. Some exceptions are songs like Rock Robotics, where the mines give you a clear indication that it's something intentional. That's why so many people bitched about DDR charts for years. Sometimes they required you to do footswiches, but other times not. Just see something like End of the Century or HVAM and try NOT to switch foot. However, not ALL the crossover are supposed to be switchfoots. Some are and some aren't.

Anyways, if everyone else thinks it's fine, then whatever. I just thought I'd mention the single part where I couldn't keep up with it because I try to keep with the pattern of the chart and don't switch foot unless I feel the chart was intending me to.

Edit: Also, usually switch footing is not done during holds like in the segment I mentioned. Maybe Matt will chime in and tell us if it's intentional or not. All I know is that without switch footing, I have my back to the screen quite a bit during the segment from 50s - 1 min.

Scott,

This is how I intended it to be.

Also, thanks for the positive review! Wink It makes me happy to know that my charts are getting positive feedback from seasoned players such as yourself! If you're still confused on some of the other hold sections, I'll be happy to provide additional screenshots showing how to properly execute them (at least in my eyes).

If that's the part that you are referring to, Scott, I would think that you may have accidentally double stepped somewhere. After that last part where you are crossing over, the stream will initially be crossed over but you'll return back to forward position.

As a non-stamina player, I would say that a lot of these charts DO require a decent level of stamina ability. I still participate for the lulz, but I know I won't be winning without being able to pass 13s.

ugh yeah unfortunately quite a few of the charts, even if they're actually rated as 10s, require lots of physical endurance.

"I Really Like You" is a really jumpy song.

Hi SMH attendees,

I was hoping to update one of my songs in the SMH pack before the tournament with a corrected sync and was wondering if anyone would have a problem with this.  I was getting some pushback from Ben because apparently some of you may be practicing it off-sync and were hoping to use it as a surprise pick on someone who didn't know it was off-sync.  I think this is ridiculous as the song was never meant to be off-sync in the first place.

Please, let me know if you have any quarrel with updating the pack this close to the tournament.  For reference, the song I am referring to is Ghost Ride It.

Thanks,

-Chris

Yeah.. I'd personally be in favor of allowing sync corrections, though the tourny is coming up soon at this point.
