I was talking with Bobby Conover, and we thought that it might be sweet to have an informal tournament to help things get started over at Pink Gorilla this Saturday or next. The deal would be that this would be a "pay as you play" tournament, but there would be no entry fee - you'd just have to pay for your own games. Prizes would be Bemani swagger donated by myself and if we all went out for lunch afterwards, I'd pay for the winner or something.

So, the first question is this: would you be interested in such an event? The second question is, if so, which day do you find preferable?

I'm interested. I think it would be fun.

I like the pay as you pay idea; I had a similar idea, but never got a good enough community to do that down in Olympia. I'm up for 2/27 because it would give me and maybe others a chance to go up there and play a few games to get a feel for SN2; also Saturday is the only time I go to the arcades in the Seattle area.

So 2/20 wouldn't be too good for me because I'd be unprepared (even though this isn't really a big tournament), but if most people want 2/20 then I'll go anyway. Grin

2/20 because I will be out of town for 2/27 and a trampoline after-party is in order.

I wouldn't be able to do the 20th for mid-afternoon, but I'm not sure if I'd enter anyway. I might, depends on rules. Smiley

Here were my thoughts:

-Double elim.
-Best 2 out of 3; if a player wins decisively after only two songs are played, the winner gets to choose what song the two players finish out their credit with, but it doesn't count towards anything in the match.
-No level capping, but if a player fails their own pick, walks off the stage, or otherwise causes the credit put in the machine to prematurely end, that player loses the match.

The other idea I had was that, since players would pay for their own games, the qualifier could be a set of three songs.

This is all just preliminary though! :O

You know, I really want to keep this thread about gauging interest for an informal tournament, but I am sure that people are wondering WTF is up with this trampoline stuff, so I think I'm just going to make that its own thread. Cheesy

If Bobby puts a 4th Mix or 5th mix in, I vote for having an old school tourny on one of those mixes. That sounds way more fun than another regular tournament. But, I'm down for both or whatever everyone else wants to do.

I've talked some with Bobby, and I don't want to speak for him, but it essentially sounds like we as a community can guarantee that second DDR machine by proving to Pink Gorilla's management that DDR is a big earner. That's part of the reason that I want to hold a tourney where people pay for their games - the more money the Supernova 2 earns, the more feasible expanding that arcade becomes. Smiley

I agree that an oldschool tournament would kick butt though! Especially on a 4th plus... all the old licenses AND Korean songs! <3

A'ight guys, it looks like it's gonna have to be 2/27. So here's my next question (for the community.) Would you prefer:

-Having no prizes/donated prizes or having to pay a 5 dollar entry fee in addition to paying for your games?
-Single elim or double elim? (IE: do you care more about it being short or balanced?)

Double Elimination!  Smiley

Since it's informal, I recommend single elim.

But I'm not expecting lots of people to show up, so double elim might be feasible.

Play it by ear. Fewer people, make it dbl elim. More people, make it single. It'll also cost us less if it's single.
