What software do you guys use to create simple digital art for backgrounds/banners? I've used GIMP in the past, but I'm just not getting the results I'm looking for (and admittedly a fair portion of it could my skill or lack thereof.) Any suggestions?

Grab the "super ultra free edition" of photoshop. CS6 preferred

www.pixlr.com is a great legal alternative to pirating Photoshop, and has the majority of features that most Photoshop users know how to use.

I use photoshop, but if you want to be legal and legitimate, Pixlr is freakin' AWESOME.

Pixelmator (http://www.pixelmator.com/) is a much cheaper (and prettier) alternative to photoshop for OS X. I use for most of my image editing.
